I like my V-1. It does exactly what it is supposed to do. It detects radar and laser. Now if the target is in front or behind you then the detector will warn you. And it will warn you well. If you are the target, then you may have enough time to compensate, maybe not.
An arguement could be started on the accuracy of traffic radar and the competence of it's users. I don't think we want to go there. All I wanted to state is that the unit does what it is supposed to do, and in my opinion, does it better than any other detector. Period.

Big Bob, Amianthus, et al...

A last word on the subject. This isn't, from my standpoint, about slamming the "V-1". Owners of same on this thread keep making assertions about how it's saved them mountains of money -- "many, many, many" multiples of it's cost in insurance, speeding tickets, and so on and so forth...

Fine. I'm willing to acknowledge (again) that the V-1 is "the best. " In fact, send me an affidavit and I'll sign it. I'll do a spot on national television lauding the "V-1" as the very, absolute, "sprinkled with Holy Water by His Eminence in Rome," best radar detector on the market in the United States -- no, the world.

That's not my concern, though. And, that wasn't my point. The question is NOT whether it makes sense to use a good quality radar detector to lessen the likelihood you'll be ticketed (and have your insurance rates hiked). The question is whether you need "the best" and, not coincidentally, by far the most expensive detector in order to afford yourself a "reasonable" level of protection.

The term "overkill" comes to mind when searching for a word to illustrate the concept, here. Expensive overkill. My radar detector cost less than $100. It croaks like a bullfrog if cops are behind me. It bleats, frantically, like a sheep with its nuts in a vice when they're in front, too. While it's beeping, little multicolored lights flash in ascending order and cause me to watch it -- instead of the boring roadway in front of me. It's got a "sensitivity" setting, a "City-Highway" mode (in "Highway" it picks up more corn-dog cookers) a volume control, and other features I've been too lazy to figure out. All this for under 100 simoleons.

On the other hand, it won't differentiate whether there are three or five radars currently working my area. I guess, somehow, I've overlooked the importance of THAT intelligence. Nor will my little detector allow for remote mounting of another light and speaker box that will make more frog and sheep noise, but "out of sight" of the hordes of folks tailgating me to watch my "V-1" in action...

Okay, I admit it. I'm lusting for a V-1 BIG TIME. We're talking major league "woody," here. Gotta have it.

But, I'm waiting for the next model (cue drum roll): "THE VALENTINE II". It's going to be gold-plated, and ship with an earphone-equipped propeller beanie. #ad

Guess we're having a good time with this subject! Sasquatch, everything I purchased with my truck from the Cummins down to the rear end cover has been 'the best' - at least in my humble opinion. I can't resist doing the same with a radar detector.

John, at the meeting I didn't know I was interested in any type of radar detector. It was a few days later that the wife said we need one for the trip to Townsend to meet the SETDR group and an instant smile went on my face. I remembered reading a long time ago about the Valentine was the professional truckers choice - that's good enough for me especially with the feedack on this posting.

RAMBO,

If we can't have fun participating on this list, what's the point?!? We can do "research" at the library! #ad

**** , I'm not in a position to throw stones, here. I spent (with full, self-rationalizing, justification... ) $200+ on MUDFLAPS! 'Course this strategic decision saved me many, many, MANY times the eventual expenses in insurance claims and legal actions filed by the "V-1" afficionadoes tailgating me, hoping to catch a glimpse of my state-of-the-art radar detector, then being disappointed to learn that it was only a marginally functional Uniden, and getting rocks thrown through their windshields by my naked, manly-man rear tires... (big breath)

Seriously, I've learned a new axiom related to Cummins/Ram Truck ownership; actually, it's a new twist on an old economic principle: "Expenditures will rise to meet income. " The TDR axiom should be: "Rationalizations will rise to justify expenditures!" I've heard it all, and seen it all. So, has my long-suffering wife, at this point.

When I started into my spiel about the need to protect the rocker panels with $200+ mudflaps ("... 'cause it's gonna save a bazillion dollar paint job, down the road... "), she raised her hands and started backing away. This pissed me off, no end; I had rehearsed a comeback for every conceivable objection...

SO... I can relate to you V-1 buyers. There's definitely something to be said for "always buying the best," provided you can afford to faithfully follow that principle. #ad

Sasquatch,
Sorry, I didn't mean to put it that way. It was late and I was getting tired. Anyway, I purchased it because I live in an area patrolled by ticket nazi's. I have two tickets in town here. The first was for 35 in a 30. The second is for 30 in a 25. This was before getting a radar detector. If you guys think I am exaggerating, look at the Madison newspaper and read how Stoddard (a town just south of here) is getting rid of ALL of thier cops.
My "other' radar detector works fine, but the V-1 gives me much more warning. And I believe that here, I need all the warning I can get. I am hoping to see a return on my investment. In the area I live in, that shouldn't take too long.
Just to answer your question, yes, I do need the best. #ad
I'm with ISB Rambo on this one. Nothing, I have done to my truck has been Half-butted. #ad
BTW, No offense taken. Opinions and points of view are always appreciated.
