Hi guys:

I know where there might be one of these trucks for sale: it's a 2000 3/4ton, 4x4, cummins, auto, extended cab shortbed. Sport, power windows and locks, air, cruise, tilt, cd player and cassett, bed liner, tonneau cover, nice wheels, and a set of buckshot 285's. Truck has ~45,000 miles on it. Body and interior excellent. No leaks. My questions are: What is it worth? How troublesome will my injection/transfer pumps be? How about the auto transmission? What will mileage be? Is the warranty still in effect? Is the KDP an issue with 24 valves? I thank you boys;)

John

Go to Kelly Blue Books and look it up. There are 3 prices you can lookup.

Trade in value

Price dealer will charge

Price for private sale.

If the truck is modified, I feel it should lower the value, unless you really want that mod, as any performance enhancing mods void the warranty.

Kind of like buying a home with an in-ground swimming pool. Most buyers here in the NE will talk the seller down because of the pool, but as soon as they move in the first thing they do is "open the pool"!

No Kdp is not an issue with the 24 Valve in question.

I say that truck is worth about 22-25k depending on the area you live in.

This being my first Diesel I'm still amazed at how they retain thier value.

I just looked up my 2001. 5 in the Kelly blue book and got a Private party retail price of $28k.

I paid $30k out the door for it and that was with the upgraded tires , tinted windows, paint protection and rust proofing.

I'm happy !

I don't believe that it's been tuned up any. It's a good looking truck. Is the warranty transferrable to me as long as it's under 100,000 miles or 5 years or is it just for the original owner? Will there be fuel system trouble with it?

Keep the comments coming!

John

good Question, I think its transferable. Now that 100K 5 year is only on the motor. This truck may or may not have the 7-70K power-train, they came out with it right around that time.

As far as the fuel system, sorry to say you will have problems with it in time. Guaranteed it will need a lift pump or 3 along the line, but at $150. 00 (from cummins) and a 1/2 hour to change, no big deal.

I traded my 2000 3500 QC 4x4 with 56K miles in 6 months ago and they gave me $23,000 trade in value (plus my truck had $3000 in hail damage on it) I would think that the truck you described would be worth $24,000 from a private owner.

"How troublesome will my injection/transfer pumps be?"

I had the lift pump replaced on my 2000 under warranty at around 45,000 miles. On the 2000 the lift pump is covered under the 7 year 70,000 mile emissions warranty, not the 5 year 100K mile engine warranty (different years have different coverage, need to read the book)

"How about the auto transmission?"

The automatic transmission is covered under the 3 year 36K mile warranty for the 2000 model year. As long as the truck has not been abused or the power turned up the stock auto is a solid unit.

"What will mileage be?"

It depends on the rearend you have in that truck. My 2000 with the 4. 10 got 16 mpg around town and 19 mpg on the freeway. My truck weigh 7200 lbs stock. I would think the one you are looking at would get 18 mpg around town and 21 mpg on the freeway.

"Is the warranty still in effect?"

Before you buy this truck from a private owner I would take it to the dealer where you will have your warranty work done and ask them if the trucks 5 year 100K mile warranty is in effect, have them look and see if it has ever been modified. Then get it in writing that the warranty is good from the dealer. (just a note on the work order from the service manager will do) After you buy the truck there is a number in the warranty book that you call and give them your name and vin number and they will transfer the warranty into your name. They will also put you in the system for recall notices etc.

"Is the KDP an issue with 24 valves?"

Like Justin said KDP is not an issue for the 2000 and newer CTD's.

Just for grins you might want to check and see what block it has in it. If it has a #53 under the VP44 and right above the oil pan it is not a problem but you can use it to lower the price. The #53's had a 6 mm thick block instead of a 12 mm and some have cracked below the exhaust manifold and above the oil pan on the passenger side. If there is no #53 in big 1 inch letters cast into the block then that is a good thing and means you have a Mexican block. ( don't tell the seller ;) )

Good luck.

If you want to get froggy with the bombs the auto transmission will cost you at LEAST $2500 to get "beefed up" where you have a good chance of it living a while. A clutch for a 6 speed that will hold 500 HP is less than a grand, a clutch and fully splined shaft for a 5 speed installed is less than $1500.

I hate my auto with a passion, be darn sure you have the cake to spend on it before you buy it.

My brother bought a 99 with 89,000 miles on it and after a month or two he installed a fuel pressure gauge and found his lift pump was going bad:mad: . He took it to the dealer near his house and they didn't even bat an eye. They scheduled it in and fixed it 2 days later under the 5yr/100,000 warranty:D . Phil:D

So... how satisfied have you guys been with your trucks? I know that the way I run a truck, the transmission could go out at sometime but it outta last me 150,000 miles. I prolly won't tweak the motor until after warranty is up. NOW, what do you do with the lift pump issue? This discussion forum is crawling with lift pump failures. If I buy a truck I don't want ot have to deal with problems again, partly the reason for updating: miles and age. I don't want to Pi$$ with changing lift pumps on an annual basis. Once you get the updated part, are you okay? Is this the only problem with these engines? I just don't want to spend the money on a truck if It only has 45000 miles on it and I'm working on it the first month i own it. Keep the good info coming, anything important you can think of to help me out;)

John

If your worried about the lift pump, when you buy the truck add a Fuel pressure gauge :) These are tough trucks and even tougher motors. I have two friends that have 24 valve CTD's and beat them to death. Neither one even knows his truck has a lift pump. One has never even changed his fuel filter on a 2000 truck with many miles over the change interval. Take the recommendations from the previous posts and if the truck checks out to your satisfaction then buy it. Enjoy ;)

Guys:

I'm going to go take a look at this truck again today. I talked to the owner and he said it's only been in 4wd once or twice this past winter. He wants $25,000 for it, that is a little high isn't it?

I'll try to find out a little more today and let you boys know. In the meantime, what's it really worth?

Thanks,

John

I don't think the price is out of line if it is as clean as you say it is with that low of mileage. You can get two things from your local dealer that might help your decision. Give the dealer the VIN # and they can print you a build sheet that tells you every thing the truck has on it down to when and where it was built. They can also give you a print out of any warranty service. Good Luck.
