How do you remove the hockey puck part of the crankcase vent at the top front of the timing gear cover? I pried and tugged on it a little today but didn't want to damage it if that is not the way it comes out.

you do not need to be exact on the tdc, in fact you can be 20* off and will make no difference. once you have it approx dead tdc, chalk mark the bottom of the harmonic ballancer so when you turn the engine over 1 complete revolution you do not have to get up to see where you are

Pull off the valve cover, rotate the engine until bough valves on #1 are closed. Watch as the rocker starts lifts as the valves are closed and the other begins to move down. That point where the two rockers stop moving is tdc. Mark the harmonic balancer and you ready to start.

Actually TDC and BDC were very easy once I knew how to remove the crankcase vent. Just used the alternator bolt to turn counter clockwise and line up the TDC marks using my telescoping inspection mirror. Then marked the bottom of the nut with chalk for BDC. Turned it close with that mark. Then with my inspection mirror lined up the TDC mark with the slot at the bottom where the crankcase vent screws in.
