Valve Adjustment Milage?

Maybe I'm blind... but I was looking in the service schedule and I don't see anything about milage increments for valve adjustments. When should I have this done? I'm just shy of 30k miles. I've followed the manual on services. . is there anything else that I should have done that's not noted in the DC maint. schedule? Thanks guys!

You're good to go 'till about 150,000 miles if I'm not mistaken here. It says it in the owners manual, not sure where though.

NEVER done it yet but some "ADVISE" I've gotten:

1) It would pay to do it and ensure the valves are seated and within specs (how does this ensure seating)
2) "there is" a TSB that "suspossedly" states to adjust them . 002 tight(er) for better performance (what type of performance = unkn)
3) the DC recommended is 150k for the 24v starting in (?). My y2k is a 150k, not sure about the 99 and down (I think they still the "old" maintenance = not sure)
4) would like to get the "straight" info on #'s 1 & 2, if anyone has it. As quotes of 175+$'s to adj them is/makes it a do-it-your-self $$ saver, even if I have to buy the barring tool.

i asked jim lenard about that 150,000 valv adjustment spec,he said it was a joke,that he had done adjustments on 24 VALV trucks WITH AS LITTLE AS 14,000 MI THAT WERE WAY OUT OF SPEC.
I LOOK AT IT THIS WAY, AN ADJUSTMENT IS CHEEP INSHURENCE,AND POSSABLY PERFORMANCE AND MILEAGE.

I looked this info up in the 2001 service manual for a gentleman on Sunday. It shows Valve Lash adjustment due at 150,000 under schedule A, and 135,000 under schedule B. I wonder though..... since new, my Cummins has had what I would categorize as "valve chatter" when I put my foot in it. Are these out-of-adjustment valves or just normal for the 24-valve? Experienced advice appreciated.

David, I think it's valve lash you are hearing. I'm at 31K and am thinking about doing the adjustment for peace of mind.

Thanks guys! I appreciate all your feedback. Like Alan, I think I will have the valves adjusted earlier than scheduled (30k miles). It can't hurt, right?

I agree that they should be adjusted before the 100,000 + "recomendation" but probably not before 30K miles. I just turned 32K and the engine now seems to be "broken" in. guess it depends on who much and how often you tow, or pull or load the engine, but I see posts where people with 3 - 4 K miles think the engine is "broke" in, just don't think so even after 15K miles. anything earlier than 30, just think you'd have to do it all over again, unless you have serious valve lash problems. don't know what the rest of you think, but a "little" tapping is better than over tightened in my book.

Here is the official word from the Cummins website.

"When should I adjust the valves?"

For the 12-valve engine in the Dodge Ram, the valves should be adjusted initially at 24,000 miles and there after every 48,000 miles. For the 24-valve engine in the Dodge Ram, the initial valve adjustment should be complted at 150,000 miles.

I think this info, which was posted back in '98 stated to have an initial valve lash check performed at 48k miles, and then the next check at 140k miles. Looks like Cummins has determined that this initial check is no longer necessary.

I might have a printout of this early info. If I can find it, I'll post it later.
