I'm coming up on 140k miles and the valves on my truck haven't ever been checked or adjusted. I've never done a valve adjustment on any vehicle and was looking for some help. Do I need a special tool to turn the engine over? How do you find TDC? Can anyone walk me through this... I'd like to learn. Thanks for the help.

You can turn it over by using a socket on the alternator. You will need a mirror to find TDC. Feeler gauges of courses. Its not real hard but # 5 and 6 are a pain cause they are way back there.
 
the hardest part is really just getting the valve cover and the rear valve cover bolt out. If your careful with your gasket, you can probably reuse it. I'd recommend finding a hanes manual or cummins manual with the procedure in it. Its really easy. I know you have to remove the breather from the timing cover, and then you adjust the valves on 5 of the cyls. with the line on the VP44 pump gear facing 12o'clock, and then finish up with it facing the 6o'clock position. Thats where the mirror will come in handy, finding tdc using that line on the pump. I can't remember what order you adjust them in though.
 
I could use those instructions also please. I'm going to order the gasket from Genos. That's the best price I've found so far.

on my 99, using the alternator nut just slipped under the belt. i had to use the fan nut on the fan clutch to rotate the engine over. i need a new belt.....
 
The Easiest Way to take the valve cover off , Take all the bolts out, wrestle the back bolt out and cover the hole. Have someone push the heater hoses down and slide the cover off to your left! Valve Adjustment takes us about 1 Hr in the shop, take or give!

i just completely removed all but the last two bolts, lifted up and rolled/slid the cover over the heater hose. it was much easier than i expected after reading several threads. first time for me doing the CTD was about 1h 15min.
 
At 140K, you will notice a difference in performance after doing it. There is a mark on the pump gear, and a mark on the gear housing. Line these 2 up to start (mirror is VERY handy). Then mark your h-balancer in relation to the belt (that will be close enough for valve adjusting).



With the valve cover off, and the engine at #1 TDC (marks lined up) adjust the following-



#1- I & E; #2-I; #3-E; #4-I; #5-E. I= Intake and E= Exhaust.



Turn engine 180 deg using your preferred method. Then adjust the rest of the valves not adjusted in the first half-



#2-E; #3-I; #4-E; #5-I; #6-I & E.



Reinstall the valve cover and you're done.

Just to chime in here.....

I did my 99 2 weeks ago, with 180k on it. I doubt that it's been done before, I bought the truck with 94k on it. It's not too bad of a job, a little oily, and #5 and #6 are a stretch. I did pick up a tool kit from Cummins last fall when it was on sale with the barring tool. Personally, I'd HIGHLY recommend the barring tool, it's very easy to use. The only difficulty is crawling out to check the pump gear timing.

After effects? It does seem to be running a hair smoother. And once warm, it pulls one heckuva lot better and smoother off idle.

You need to mark the balancer and go 360 degrees to do it right, once you go 360 it will be at the 6 oclock position, this is what it says in the manual, i know i read it after i did to 180 and it was off a little so i did it again and now we are good.
 
when using the feeler gauge... . you just slide it in between the rocker arm socket and the crosshead right? Should there be slight friction when passing it between the two points or what?

Its well worth it to go over them twice if not more , I just done mine and went back and some were off , I set mine on 8/18 after going back the 2nd time I shook the bridge and rocker to make sure everything was seated wright locked it down and went back and tried to at least slip a 10 in there and it would almost start but would go . So that assured me it was were i wanted it , and the truck runs great , also make sure u get as much oil off cause it has a film too
