Valve Adjustment price

I priced a valve adjustment at the Cummins dealer and it was $80. That is not too bad, is it?

That's about an hour labor? Sounds pretty good. Most shops out here won't touch anything for less than an hour labor (minimum charge. )

When I bought my 96' 12V the price was about $180. A friend who just bought a 12V diesel pusher was quoted $400. $80 seems like a good price to have someone else do it. It's also not difficult to do the job yourself if time permits.

I would venture to guess the labor rate is much lower there than here in Cali.

On inline 6 Z cars it paid 1. 0!!!! techs did them daily. Was due every 15k! I did my 12 valve in about 1. 5 on my first time.

I did mine in about 35 minutes, but that was after doing about 20 or so at school and already knowing the specs and which valves to ajust on which cylinders. Aslo it was nice having someone watch the TDCC mark for me while I cranked it over. :-laf

i have a 1999 dodge with a Cummins diesel and went to the dodge dealer while buying parts. i stopped by the service desk for a quick estimate on a valve adjustment and was quoted $ 500. 00.



my recommendation is to stay away from Dodge dealers and seek a Cummins diesel mechanic. bet you will get a better price.



i also hear that you can do it yourself. you may have to manually spin the crank yourself.

Manually spinning the engine is easily done with the alternator.

I paid just shy of $200, incl. gasket. Is the gasket re-useable? I know I got a new one, just wondering if it's neccessary. It's one of those things I'm sure I could do myself, I just don't feel like learning on a $10K engine.

I made sure and the Cummins dealer here in Columbia, MO said about $100 maybe a little more if the valve cover cracks (he said they are prone to cracking upon removal). I think I'll be making an appointment next week

I just did mine myself. The hardest part was getting the valve cover off, and once I figured that out, it didn't take me very long.

They ARE reusable... I can't understand why they would change it????



Its very easy to make one look like new, so check it close
