Nate,

I've heard that the valves are typically more out of adjustment the first time around as the valves wear into the seats. In some cases they would be tight as opposed to loose. When I did mine on an 01 24V they were rather loose. It was around 50k-60k. Perhaps they are set a little looser at the factory to allow for the combination of the valves wearing in and the person never does anything to their truck. Dunno.

Goose,

The last set I did was on the earlier 24V engine and it took me around 30 minutes or a little over 1 beer in moderate weather. Seemed like I spent half the time getting the valve cover out. The 3rd gen cover comes out easier. I'm at 72k on mine and will probably run mine pretty soon. When I do I'll post back and let you know.

I know for sure the previous owner didn't do a valve adjustment, though he bought the truck with about 120,000 on it, so it's possible that owner did. Didn't really think about that. Judging from the work I've had to do on this truck though, I'm doubting it. Still had the original antifreeze, gear oil, T Case, etc.

In case you are interested, I toured the plant that builds our engines, and the valve adjustment is done by a robot, not by hand. It takes about twenty seconds to to the entire adjustment procedure!

The 617 & 616 Mercedes diesel engines are not to be turned backwards (ccw) but for the life of me, I cant remember why
