Cleaning the cat will have no bearing on the adjustment.
Find someone that had work done on their diesel at the dealer you're concerned with and ask them.
I did it myself, and it wasnt very difficult.
Isnt Scheid diesel in Indiana? Have them do it.

Question?? have you ever adjusted valves with a feeler guage on any engine??
The cummins is a no brainer if you have done it on say a chev 235 gasser!

Actually, there are two firing orders for an in line six. I found this out the hard way.

2 shus, I got the Snap-On stepped feeler gauge. Takes some of the hassle out of doing it. It's about $10. 00. I couldnt find one in Sears.

Has anyone had good results getting their valves adjusted at a dodge dealership? I am considering letting a small dodge dealership do mine that has a diesel technician on staff who does diesel and gas. I can't find anyone locally other than cummins who will do it. I don't think i am up to trying it myself just yet. Also i am trying to get my cat cleaned up, should this be done before valve adjustment? Thanks
 
I've had to fix all too many valve adjustment problems from dealers. One particular truck had cedar wood chips inside the valve covers... . like the dealer did it out in the woods and just dropped the covers in the brush. All of them were horror stories... . from broken pushrods to wood chips. Find a good Cummins Midrange shop and get it done there.

Don't let the valve adjustment scare you. It is pretty easy. Get a service manual, read up, ask questions about the theory if you have any and grab some tools! If you don't want to spring for a manual, you might get one of the members to scan the correct page and email it to you.
