If you do adjust them, get a good quality dial indicator to do it with unless you are real good with feeler gages. . hence the "feel" in its name. With the dial indicator you *see* what the lash is. After you adjust one, give it a "wiggle" with the indicator still hooked up to insure you're getting a true reading after it settles and moves a bit. Another tip: only turn the engine the way its supposed to turn. If you go past your adjusting point, dont back the engine up! Just keep going around until you find it again. There is play/lash in everything and you can screw up the valve timing by adjusting them without getting all the lash out of the valvetrane.

Hope this helps.

Issue 30 of the TDR mag. does a good job of getting you started on a valve adjustment. It covers the specs. you need to do the job. Regards Pete

Chad,
What is this dial indicator set-up for checking valve lash? and where can I find one.

I remember hearing about this before in the forums (probably was you?). Before I did my last valve adj I attempted to find this dial indicator thing for checking valves. Everyone I asked looked confused, said they never heard of such a thing, and tried selling me a set of feeler gauges.

Is this simplly a regular ol dial indicator with some sort of apparatus rigged to it to measure valve lash? I have seen dial indiactors in Sears Tool Catalog, but don't see how they would be able to get in there to measure the valve lash.

Just a generic general purpose dial ind. set. Cost about $100 give or take, and has several uses other than adjusting valves. I wouldnt spend more than $100 on one. Comes with a dial ind, some attachments for different angles and such. The whole kit would fit in the palms of both your hands.

1tuffram,

Tool King has them in the display cases by the registers. You will need to get a stand(holder) for it, get a holder with a magnetic base so it can be put any where, they have 3 or 4 adjustable arms.

Thanks GTX, there is a Tool King down the road from where I live. Maybe once I look this thing over I will figure-out and understand how it replaces a feeler gauge.
The only time I have seen dial indicators used is on those sunday mechanic shows when checking the brake rotors to see how warped they are.
