Valve Cover Oxidizing????

Thats right my 98. 5's valve cover is falling apart due to oxidizing. Would anyone know if this would be covered by the engine warrenty because my bumper to bumper warrenty is up . I also heard that you can get a valve cover from a cummins dealership. Anyone with info on that would also be appreciated.

I don't know if your valve cover would be covered or not, but seems like it should be. Could it be the clearcoat spray they put on it that is coming off?

98.5 Valve Cover

My ASSumption is that it would not be covered. Considering most car owners don't know where to check the oil..... Its unlikely DC would replace a cover due to cosmetic reasons.



On the other hand, since mine is a 98. 5 and I have the same problem... . Let me know if you make any headway. .



I planned to paint or polish this cover... . otherwise buy a new red cover.

The part number is 3943668 for the red valve cover from Cummins. They cost about $100. 00. Rush shipping is another $13. 00.

Hmm, I think I like the idea about, taking the cover off and polishing it.

Sounds just in my price range for accesories. (Cheap and Good)



Be pretty cool to open my hood for a Duramax or Powerstroke Guy, and all the'll see is a Shiny Painted valve cover and On the left, a Manifold and Turbo, and on the right, the Pump and brake system etc. Compared to the Over Stuffed hood of a Power Stroke, and the Cluttered space of a Duramax.

I just put the red Valve cover on mine, its beautiful, it makes a huge difference.

did you use Simple Green ?... If left on to long it will leave a pitting/ugley finish on aluminum

Simple gree will pit aluminum if left on, there is alot of info about this problem. The miliatry even has a bulletin out about it. Just be sure you rinse it all off thorughrly

Now that you mention it,, I do use Simple Green. I use it every now and then when I wash the truck. Spray down on a cool engine, then hose off when I'm just about finished washing the truck. Maybe thats too long. .



All this time I thought it was safer than using engine cleaner. . Well I guess it is for the environment.

I spray my engine and everything under the hood with Simple Green, but only leave it on for about 5 minutes before washing everything off completley. I wash until there is no soap or suds left. So far no problems. I also spray my grill, bumpers, wheel well liners and wheels before washing. Removes bugs from front very good and leaves the black plastic very clean and a like new finish. I will spray the wheel liners, wheels and tire on the front, go to the back and spray then go back and wash and rinse the front while the back is soaking then wash it down. The wheel well liners look new and so far I have no problems, but don't leave Simple Green on to long.
