How's this? Note the reflections on the side of the cover! The colors you're seeing aren't really there - it's just so bright it's messing up the digital camera. If you look closely inside of the D you can see closer to what it looked like originally but that's still way brighter - just not done to my satisfaction yet. It's actually kind of hard to get a good picture of because any light shines off of it and messes up the camera.

You can chrome aluminum but I believe it has to be plated with something like copper or iron first--not my field so could be wrong on the details. Like I said, the Cummins chrome kit for the 12 valve has chromed aluminum valve covers and air intake.

A friend of mine in the Atlanta area that restores all makes of vintage chevys' said that when it comes to chrome plating, that J. C. Whitney does some of the best plating and rechroming that he's seen and even at a good price. I kinda questioned this myself, but as picky as he is when he does all of his frame-off restos,I believe him.

Maybe some you guys could give 'em a call and find out if they can chrome the covers.

Kyle, apparently the Banks intake runner that was pictured in Four Wheeler Magazine was ALSO a prototype even though they stated it was the production version. I say also, as they also had a rougher looking prototype model in another picture (listed as a prototype model). This is all very strange as I saw the actual production model the other day. It appears to be a shorter and wider casting than either of the prototype versions although, slightly taller than the OE intake runner. As for looks, well, if you like it, fine however, I think Banks needs to go back to the drawing board! Either of the prototype versions look much better. I don't think there will be any power increase with any of the three Banks intake runners. The reason the (24v) Powerpack produces more power than the (24v) Stinger Plus is due to a hotter Ottomind.

jwgary, yes you can chrome aluminum. I had many parts on my old (new then) Kawasaki 900 chrome plated as well as several other smaller jobs since. It looked very nice! However, be forewarned; chrome plating aluminum is a trickier process and should be undertaken by a shop that specializes in such... a custom plating shop, not a production outfit. I've witnessed many poor chrome plating jobs on aluminum, usually due to poor part preparation prior to plating, resulting in flaking from the chromed surface.

Joe, triple chrome plating is the process utilized for all chrome application (steel and aluminum). This is a copper, nickel, chrome application however, on higher heat applications (i. e. exhaust manifolds, headers etc. ) the copper is omitted. The copper is what gives the chrome its depth. Sometimes many applications of the copper plating process (and subsequent polishing) are necessary to achieve the desired end result... which costs more money. This is especially true in antique car part reparation/restoration where pitting of the part surface must be repaired. Of course, this would only happen in a custom plating shop.

Steve, you are correct, chrome does tend to seal in heat however, I've NEVER seen this to be a problem in all the years I've been into high performance vehicles.

Great job Steve!
I've also seen Joes work and it's very cool!
I haven't started on my Ram yet but I'll surely get around to it. My wife says I would do fine if I were locked in a room for life as long as I had something to polish. I like to start with 220 wet/dry sandpaper then progress to 320, 400, 600 and then go to polishes. Dremel's can be very handy for tight spots.
Glad to see I'm not the only nut!

Evan...

I called a cummins parts department to order that red valve cover.

Part # 6943668 doesn't come up as a good Cummins part.

Could you double check that number and re- post...

Thanks
Larry

The part number for the red cover is 3943668. The price at Southwest Cummins is a tad over $101. 00. The problem is there are none to be had, according to the parts man. Hope this helps.

Just got off the phone with Cummins Southwest in Phoenix, and they said that the factory will have them available on October 9th. He put me down for one. We'll see what happens.
