Does Anybody Know If You Can Replace Valve Stem Seals With Out Pulling The Head? What Kind Of Mileage Do Valve Seals Need To Be Replaced At?

I would say yes, by bringing each piston to tdc and doing that one before going on down the line. This will not allow the valve to drop very far. Don't know if it is a real issue though, as far as oil consumption.

hsmith is right. I changed seals when I did heavy duty valve springs. Just do one cyl at a time, making sure that the cyl you're doing is at tdc for that cyl. That way if you drop a valve, you wont have to pull the head.

will they just pop out with a prying device like a screw driver, seal puller, or pry bar?

i can only assume i can tap them back in with a small drift and rubber mallet?

i only ask because some one told me i have to remove the head and place it in a hydraulic shop vice. i thought he may have confused "seals" with "seats" but he again specified seals need to be pressed?

what does cummins charge for a set of 12?

They are easy to replace once the spring is off. You should be able to pry them off with a screwdriver. I have rebuilt several of these heads and have never seen any seals that had hardened. All that I have taken off looked good but are always thrown out during a rebuild.

Mine came off easy, maybe with pliers or my fingers-can't remember. The only thing to press in and out of the head is the valve guides and maybe the valve seats-I don't know how the seats are put in but with a press sounds logical. The new valve seals i think just pushed into place with my fingers. You could also try a deep socket to push them with.
