Hi all, I orderd a Pac-brake today and will be installing it this weekend. I dont know if I will have time to install the valve springs and butterfly plug befor I leave for MM. Anyone have any hints on installing the springs? What spring compresser did you use?How long did it take?
Thanks in advance.

I used a Snap-On spring compressor. The kind that grabs the spring from the bottom and you crank down on it and it pulls it up. It took me about an hour and a half to do all six. You only have to move the engine three times including the first, because one and six, two and five, and three and four are done at the same time as they are at equal piston heights. Things I'd have on hand are a small telescoping magnet for the keepers, and lots of rags to cover all the holes with so that if you drop a keeper it will stay within reach. The other thing is head bolt torque. The popular way now is to give it 125 ft/lbs and that's it. But the 13mm bolts only get 18 ft/lbs. Best thing is to set aside twice the time you'll need just in case things go awry.

Bob:

The snap on tool Chris referred to is mfg. by KD and is available at most Napa's and other good parts stores. Mine cost about 54 four or five years ago and I think i saw one recently for the high $30's.

I don't remember the part number.

Mr. 5. 9 gave you the rest of the short cuts, replace your gaskets while your at it and give yourself a harty pat on the back.

Enjoy MM.

Bob, look in the archives Chris(diesel5. 9) gave some awesome instructions ! #ad
I used his instructions and did not have any problems took only an hour and a half. Chris said to put rags down and have a magnet ready he is telling the truth really cover up those holes well !! good luck #ad

My KD tool has #3271 on one of the arms. On the box from Pac containing the springs and plug, they claim you get about 30% more braking effect with the 60 psi springs.

Thanks for the replies! Got the spring compressor and stick shift switch at NAPA today. The only compressor they had was a KD 2078 but it looks like it will work and it was only $31. It took a little wile to find the part number for the switch,#PP6490 ($11. 50), they didn't have the harness so will have to make my own. Thanks again!
