Valve stems

OK I'm not sure how many of us have had issues with valve stems on your trucks but it seems like I get stuck with ones that want to fall apart. Twice on my truck and also on my boat trailer they have left me with flat tires. the metal stem separates from the rubber that mounts it to the rim. I have replace them all already but one went bad again. I was told that the traditional all rubber ones wount hold the higher pressures we run in our trucks, is that the truth or just bs.

The regular auto type valve stems won't stand up to the pressures in the truck tire, there are special high pressure rubber stems that will work but the metal ones with the nut and washer are probably better. Go to a tire place and they should have what you need. bg

I've had 3 valve stems (from Costco) go bad in the last 2 years. One cost me a XPS RIB and a destroyed inner plastic fender. I've started using all metal stems that are held on with a nut and washer.

I was up in the snow playing a couple weeks ago and went to air down for more traction and had a leaky stem.



It held the whole day at 60PSI ( I didn't air it down) and then Les Schwaab fixed it for me when I got home.

I don't know if it helps or not, but I recently ordered a set of XD Hoss wheels, that came with lug nuts and valve stems.

When I took them to the tire shop to get mounted, they said that they couldn't use those valve stems on my truck since it is a Ram 3500... that they had to use a heavy duty rated valve stem that matched the 10-ply "E" rating on the tire.

I have used the metal valve stems that use a nut & washer in my RV & never had any problems. Truck still has valve stems that came from factory with no problems, knock on wood.

let me guess costco said it was your fault and they wouldnt repair the damage to your truck. I dont mean to get off topic but I since we are talking tires and work that has to be done at a tire shop I feel it might be ok to share my experience with costco as a warning to using costco for your tire needs.





mom took her durango to costco to get new tires. the new "tech" got 5 out of 6 lug nuts off the left rear and the 6th he rounded off. appearently tried everything including an air hammer with chisel to the lug nut and the back side of the aluminum wheel. then they told us they cant change the tire becuase they cant remove it and to take it the dealer. my dad drilled out the stud. few years later my brother went to DMV to take driving test and they wouldnt allow him to take the test becuase the durango was "missing a lug nut" so they went to advance autoparts and got gorilla glue and a new lug nut and took his driving test. So beware of costco. its usually a starting point for off the street techs that customer really needs to babysit them and their vehicle.

are you guys talking about the cores coming out of the valve stems? if so try blue lock tite (red may be too strong) on the threads.

use high pressure metal stems. all the tire shops that put in the plastic ones should have their help whopped over the head. had too many rapid deflates. they can't take 80 lbs/sq/ in. . the pull in plastic ones are a hazard.
