I have a 6. 7 that has done 150000kms and it sounds like it needs a "hot set" valve adjustment ,does anyone know the time required to do this job? as per chrysler ,as i am in Australia i would have to take the vehicle to

Cummins so an idea how long Chrysler recomends for this procedure would be a great help

It is very unlikely your truck needs a valve adjustment with so few miles.

A good friend of mine who was a Dodge dealer tech for six years or so stubbornly resisted adjusting my valves on a high mileage '01 Cummins. When I finally talked him into "adjusting" the valves at 175k or 200k miles he could only tweak a few of them a tiny amount. He couldn't resist saying, "I told you so. "

You're probably only hearing injector tick or other ordinary sounds. Save your money.

Edit: A franchised Dodge dealer should have a shop rate or Dodge warranty manual which prescribes the allowed time. I would guess two hours would be more than enough for a skilled Cummins tech.

I don't have my owners manual with me but if you look in the back under scheduled maintenance, around 120,000 to 137,000 miles you should see on one of the listed maintenance items is a valve tappet adjustment.

Most shops will have their own Menue pricing for maintenence jobs. Every 24v I have checked has been all over the spectrum... ... ... . some loose some tight. They now publish a fairly wide tolerance on the specs so it will appear as they are ok as shipped.

From the FSM

The 24–valve overhead system is a “low-maintenance” design. Routine adjustments are no longer necessary, however, measurement should still take place when troubleshooting performance problems, or upon completion of a repair that includes removal and installation of the valve train components or injectors.

VALVE LASH LIMIT CHART

INTAKE EXHAUST

0. 152 mm (0. 006 in. ) MIN. 0. 533 mm (0. 021 in. ) MIN.

0. 381 mm (0. 015 in. ) MAX. 0. 863 mm (0. 034 in. ) MAX.

NOTE: If measured valve lash falls within these specifications, no adjustment/reset is necessary. Engine operation within these ranges has no adverse affect on performance, emissions, fuel economy or level of engine noise.

I have done many valve adjustments on 3rd gens and they are quite loose right from the gate. The Second Gens don't require much of any adjustment, but 3rd Gen is much Different.
Your Lash will be on the Valve cover. I have a 6. 7 and adjusted mine to the low end of the tolerances. It made it run much more quiet, and seemed to have quite a bit more power. Better breathing especially on the exhaust side.

I charge for 1 hour. Seems to take a little longer on the 6. 7 as it is a little more difficult to get to each rocker arm.

I'm with DieselLady.

But, you may have to leave the truck overnight. I believe that Cummins recommends the engine be cool/cold.

Hey there Bob,

I leave mine overnight, Up here in the high desert it gets Cold at night. I think it's around 50* when we start them. Buuurrrrrr! ")

I'm fairly certain my valves had not been touched at 250Kthe when I checked them. A couple were a little on the loose side, but not past max spec. I set them all right to spec, but I couldn't tell any difference... other than my own piece of mind.
