Valve train noise? Run valves?

All right Ive been having some weird issues with my truck... not happy right now. When I start it up, cold, it blows a pretty heavy amount of bluish/gray smoke out of the tailpipe and seems to idle rough like its missing. Rev it up or drive it, fine no probs. Wait till engine is warm drive 10 minutes and it goes away only does it when cold.

Also when I out it in gear with my foot on the brake it will knock sounds like a gasser with too low of an octane rating. Kinda has a chirping/knock sound. But only at idle in gear. Put it in park or take foot of brake, to let rpms come up and it goes away. Ive unhooked box to eliminate it but it still knocks and vibrates. Sounds like its in valve train (# 4 cyl. area) I used a mechanics stethascop to listen to motor, farther back i got noisier it was.

Im really baffled by this and bummed out any help would be greatly appreciated.

P. S. If I have to run through the valves, I would need detailed info on this, I. E. how to get to TDC at what time, TDC for each cyl, adjust all 4 valves at the same time? etc. etc. etc.

Ive adjusted valves on a small block before but Im sure this is different.

Don't rule out a valve adjustment, even with low miles.

Cummins / Dodge says the valve adjustment is not needed until 125k or 150k, but everyone should get'em checked.



After the adjustment, I could tell a tad different exhaust note..... but, the big difference is the ability of the truck to pull the same hill I see frequently in 6th gear... . at 1100 or 1200 rpm the truck pulled better under the load of the hill.



Ol' Casper got a valve adjustment Saturday morning, July 29th (truck has only 42k on it) courtesy of my great friend Ken and, after the fact..... it really needed it. Both the intake and exhaust specs were ALL over the place. I'd read some various threads over on TDR and DTR regarding the subject, and everyone was right.



The '98. 5 and up 24V's are . 010 intake and . 020 exhaust; for whatever reason, the 2006's are . 010 intake and . 026 exhaust.



Mine were as follows :



Cylinder #1 Intake : . 007 Exhaust : . 016

Cylinder #2 Intake : . 014 Exhaust : . 014

Cylinder #3 Intake : . 013 Exhaust : . 021

Cylinder #4 Intake : . 015 Exhaust : . 016

Cylinder #5 Intake : . 011 Exhaust : . 013

Cylinder #6 Intake : . 012 Exhaust : . 013



I'll most likely re-check mine again in another 40k miles or so.

While your at that valve train a hard look at the injectors might be in order. You have some classic symptoms of injector problems.

Would it go away as I bring R's up, how do I check for this leaky injector?

Your best bet is to take to a good dealer. They can run a series of test to find out which injector it "might be". if you want to find out yourself, pull the exhaust manifold and have somebody start the truck after it sits all night. Watch the ports and which ever one "smokes white" that would be your bad injector.

Thanks guys, taking to Purrformance Diesel in Fredericktown Ohio, they are going to replace bad one(s) and extrude hone and flow match the others. Will post when I get it back, hopefully it is quieted back down and has a little more "pep" after the valve adjustment and opening up the injectors.
