Was at the stealer the other day and was asking the service manager about preventative maintence and what all I should be doing. Most was normal but he said I needed to have my valves recalibrated every 24,000 miles. Is this true? I had thought the 24 valve motors didnt need valve calibration until 100k?? Kind of confused here.

Stealer is full of doo-doo!

Run away from that stealer as quickly as possible and find another one! Should be every 150K or so... . ;)

When we put the DD3s in Kent's truck we noticed his valve lash was out of spec, too loose. He has 65,000 miles or so on his '98. 5.

DEZLPWR is correct about 150k for the "easy" maintenance plan and 100K for the "real world" maintenance schedule

(DEZLPWR is also correct about the dealer :p )

I think checking at 50K or anytime the cover is off is a good idea.

I am on a 35K mile valve adjustment schedule after actually checking mine and adjusting them over the last 115K miles. The 150K miles is BS, it needs to be done at 50K MAX! The dealer is wrong on the 24K, that is the 12V interval, but he is closer than the owners manual.

That kind of what I thought, this dealership is ok but they sometimes you get the impression there might be some shady things goin on. The service manager told me the 24 valve engines are more succeptible to valve problems than the old 12 valve engines. He also told me I needed to change transmission fluid every 24k. I dont tow heavy at all (if any) but he was real persistent that it should be done on those intervals. Course this is the same place that charged me $70 for an oil and fuel filter!!

Valve adjustment

At 106K I did valve adjustment. Most valves were tight. I will be doing adjustments every 50K or so from now on. Number 6 cylinder is a pain.

I would like to do the valve adjustment at 50K comming up soon, does anybody have some instructions as to this proceedure?

TIA

cheers, Kevin

I found these on Chad Sheets web site... ... ... ... ... ... ..... thanks Chad

If you do decide to adjust them here is how to do it THE RIGHT WAY to do it.

Back all the adjustment nuts off on all rockers, then run them down with

your fingers until they touch (you will only be able to run down the rockers

with no tension on them... the ones with tension will have to wait their turn

on the next round when you rotate the engine 360 degrees. Zero the gage out

and adjust for ever how many mm or whatever measurement you want to use.

1. Put cyl #1 on TDC by using the TDC mark behind the crank case breather

on the front of the engine. You will have to remove the breather... I

believe it unscrews. You will see "TDC" stamped at 12 o'clock inside the

case and a mark on the fuel pump timing gear. Put that mark on the 12

o'clock TDC position.

2. Remove the valve cover, and mark the following INTAKE valves with a

paint marker, 1,2,4.

3. Now mark EXHAUST valves 1,3,5. with the paint marker. You should have 6

rockers marked now.

4. Adjust the INTAKE valves somewhere between . 15mm and . 38mm. , I shoot for

the middle of the road . 25mm.

5. Adjust the EXHAUST valves now between . 38mm and . 76mm. , again I shoot

for middle of the road about . 57mm.

6. Give all the rockers a good wiggle before removing the gage to make sure

all the play is out of them.

NOW ROLL THE ENGINE OVER 360 DEGREES AND ADJUST THE 6 ROCKERS NOT PAINTED

WITH A DOT.

Kevin, that procedure from Chad is the one I have used all along, it works GREAT!! I also send it to the guys that ask how to do it.

jrandol, 24K is not an unreasonable interval for the transmission at all even under light useage.

Now Vaughn, you know we installed DD2's not DD3's :p If I had went with the 3's I might've edged out DEZLPWR at DDP ;)

Seriously though, my valves were a good bit out of spec and I believe a valve adjustment will be one of 03's first maintenence items for me. I agree that 50K is a good valve adjustment interval.
