The Premium Blue is non synthetic, Premium Blue Extreme is their full synthetic line. Both have been tested extensively and approved by Cummins (hence why they endorse it on the label)
 
As an aside, I wait for one of the auto parts stores to have a sale on it- 5 bucks off a gallon. I use the non-syn variety.

Autozone has a sale on Rotella T (one of the two top oils in John Martin's 2012 review for TDR--the other is Castrol Tection). About $12/gallon. Sam's Club is a bit cheaper right now with a $6 off per case of 6 gallons.
 
The CI4+ that doesn't meet CJ spec is hard to find because Chevron quit making it a year or so ago. I have 10 or more pails of it that I am getting rid of because the new trucks can't use it.
 
My local Chevron distributor still sells Delo Multigrade 15w-40 CI-4+ in drums and pails. They buy in bulk and then repackage into the smaller containers. As of yesterday, they had not heard of anything concerning Chevron and the discontinued production of the multigrade oil. This is why I would like to know where Joe got his info. so that I can pass it on to them to look into the matter further.

As for Amsoil, my personal opinion is that it is not worth the extra cash. I have seen the internals of a 5. 9 after being subjected to 20k mile OCI's and it wasn't pretty.

Well, I have ran the AMSOIL in all of my Dodge/Cummins trucks, starting with a 1991 model. Here is a picture of one of mine after running the AMSOIL for over 150,000 miles. You must have had something going on with your vehicle, if it is as you state.

I have no intention of starting a ******* match here. What I saw were flat tappets that were no longer flat (cupped). Pulling the valve cover and seeing a clean engine is one thing, but pulling parts out and seeing them look nearly the same as they went in is another.
 
Could you explain what the issues were, and how many miles were on the engine before tearing it down. Also could you tell me what oil was used in the engine? Was it the (AME) 15W-40 HDD & MARINE oil?

I thought that ci4 had to do with lubricity and that is why the older trucks need it rather than cj4

One of the biggest reasons for the CJ-4 oils was to address the catalytic converters and the DPF' Diesel Particulate Filters, along with the REGENERATION systems on all DIESEL engines produced after January 1, 2007. This made the oil Companies formulate and produce an oil that has less (SAPS) SULPHATED ASH, PHOSPHORUS, SULPHUR in the oils for Diesels produced after that date. THere are also many other differences in the chemical makeup as well to address Volatility, High Temp/High Shear Viscosity, shear stability, High Temp Corrosion, seal compatibility, and many more. It is thought by many that the reduction of the SAPS has degraded the CJ-4 Oils, but that is simply not true.

Moot point for me. I switched over to Red Line synthetic this last oil change. Pretty expensive. But one of the advantages that I've at least heard claimed is that syn oil can increase fuel mileage by maybe a mpg (?). If that is true, I will make up the diff between the cost of the syn that the delo that I had been using on the trip Im taking next month.
