I am new to the TDR and diesel world and need some info on the valvoline prem. blue 2000 synthetic oil. Since valvoline is related to cummins I would think it would be great for my cummins. My local cummins dealer did recomend it but wanted to ask the pros. I also wanted to know what the best oil filter is for my Y2K. thanks.

The blue 2000 oil was developed jointly by valvoline and cummins specifically for the cummins diesel engines. The best filters IMHO is the fleetguard from cummins, ie : LF3894 (stratapore) for the 24v.

Correction, the Cummins Premium Blue 2000 was developed by Cummins' Don Carver (Lubrication Engineer), who is now with the Exxon Company. The PB 2000 is produced by Valvoline for Cummins, which, if reports on this BB are correct, Cummins just purchased Valvoline. As previously stated by Bob-TEXAS, the Fleetguard LF3894 StrataPore oil filter is the premium oil filter for our Rams.

Maybe this is old news however... when I purchased some Valvoline/Cummins Premium Blue 2000 (semi-synthetic) at Cummins NW (Renton, WA. ) yesterday, I discovered that along with the new label on the container, came a long awaited approval; the oil is now 100% approved for use in our Cummins B (and C) engines, as it now carries the appropriate API "S" rating. . in this case SJ. It carries the APIs newest "C" designation, CH-4 as well. As some of you may remember, the lack of the API "S" rating has always been a technical sticking point. Previously, the PB 2000 lacked the "S" rating, simply, because the oil was never submitted for testing. Don Carver, formerly, Chief Lubrication Engineer for Cummins, stated at the 1995 TDR Rally in Columbus, OH, that the oil would pass the current API "S" criteria IF the oil was submitted for testing, going on to say that it was OK for use in the "B" and "C" engines (the appropriate API "S" rating is necessary for proper lubrication of the "sliding cam tappets"). However, Cummins' official position was NOT in concurrence with Don Carver's statement regarding the use of PB 2000 in our engines.

It's funny, I still have an e-mail response from Cummins (dated 12-09-98) warning me that if I use PB 2000, "any failures determined to be caused by the oil, would not be considered (for warranty) by Dodge or Cummins. "

John,
The statement by Cummins, whoever that may have been, warning you that if you use PB 2000, "any failures determined to be caused by the oil, would not be considered (for warranty) by Dodge or Cummins", applys to ALL oils! If it was determined ANY oil caused damage to ANY part of an engine, or anything that oil was subjected to,then the manufacturer of the OIL, would be liable!

This of course would have to be PROVEN! The only way for this to be achieved, would be with an oil analysis. The oil analysis would be the avenue that would be taken to "PROVE" the oil was indeed the culprit!

Bear in mind, if this were to happen, there would likely be many, many other engines out there that would also be having a problem as well! No oil is smart enough to attact only one thing in an engine and make the part fail!

This is only ONE of the many reasons I do a periodic oil analysis at a pre-decribed time and mileage!

Best regards,

Wayne

Amsoilman, I believe the official, Cummins Engine Co. , policy regarding the use of Premium Blue 2000 (semi-synthetic) in the "B" and "C" series engines, stated that if I was to use the Premium Blue 2000 (which at that time, did NOT have an API "S" rating), and there was a resultant engine failure, it would be tough nuggets for me. Cummins went on to say in their e-mail, they suggested the use of their Premium Blue (mineral oil) in my ISB. I had also called the 1-800-DIESELS number at least several times, posing that very question (the use of PB 2000 in my ISB) to them. They always gave the, "you better not, or else" answer.

Do they make Premium Blue 2000 in 5w/30w? My ;ocal Cummins dealer swears they only make 15w/40w.

I would like to thank everybody that helped me with the info. I think I will use the oil in my truck since it meets the requirements that you say.

I have used PB 2000 since day 1 in my 97. I did my first oil analysis last oil change. Blackstone lab. said it showed very low bearing wear. It was below all the universal averages. The oil had 7,500 miles on it when I changed it. I think it must work good!

I have switched to Delvac 1 (full synthetic from Mobil) for the winter time. It is a 5W-40. If my oil analysis from my next oil change is positive, I will probably stick with the Delvac 1. I have heard that any oil is good, as long as you dont switch brands. Hope this helps.

Will someone list the the technical specs for valvoline prem. blue 2000 synthetic oil as I have done for AMSOIL SERIES 3000 SYNTHETIC 5W30 HEAVY-DUTY DIESEL OIL in the product forum link? I plan to do one for the 15W-40 AMSOIL SYNTHETIC DIESEL AND MARINE ENGINE OIL unless someone else would like to do it for me. Comparing the specs helps me make a decision on what oil to use. Most car/truck dealerships recommend what oil to use based on what they sell not because of the best specifications. I am not an AMSOIL dealer but I like looking up specs for lubricants before I buy.

I have decided to go to the 11,250 oil change before switching to the Blue 2000. I am at 10,800 now and just picked up a couple of cases of the oil today. I talked to Cummins Southern Plains and decided to join the Power Masters Club for a extra savings of 10% on all oil and parts.

Just thought I'd pass on a little information that I got on PB2000. I had been running it since I got my truck (bought it with 24,000 miles on it). I decided to try LE lubes (check out https://www.turbodieselregister.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/000306.html for the debate on LE - I decided to use it, btw) in my diffs and t-case. While researching the lubes I got the test results that LE had on a number of engine oils. The 2 tests that I have the results for are the Falex pin & vee block wear test (ASTM D-2670) and the TFOUT (ASTM D-4742). To my horror PB2000 tested WORSE than PB on both these tests! The results for PB2000 were a FAIL on the ASTM D-2670 and 291 minutes on the ASTM D-4742 and the PB was a Pass and 16 teeth of wear on the 2670 and 361 minutes on the 4742. LE explains that the 2670 test is "somewhat like "cold engine start," which produces the highest engine wear rates. " and the 4742 test for oxidation resistance, "the longer the induction time, the better the oxidation resistance of the oil. " I decided to stop using the PB2000 at that point. BTW, if anyone wants some PB2000 cheap I've got some for sale - I think I've got 5-6 gallon jugs of it.

It is approved by Cummins/DC - whether it is safe would be a personal call, IMO. I personally decided to not use the 5+ gallons that I have on hand given the info that I had on hand. If it were me and I were making the choice between Premium Blue and Premium Blue 2000 (discounting all of the other oils out there), I'd just go with the Premium Blue.
