I am thinking of using the Valvoline premium Blue now that some one carries it locally. My questions to you guys that already use it are:

1. Does it stink as bad as ROtella?

2. What were you using before the Premium Blue?

3. Did you notice any differences? Cleaner, Dirtier, ETC...

Thanks!!

Just started using Premium Blue Extreme. It does stink more than the Amsoil I was running. Quite a bit more. Too soon to know about how it works compared to Amsoil.

I bought enough Valvoline premium blue to change the oil twice in my new truck. First change at 1000 miles. Now have 4700 miles on it and am planning on changing this weekend. After that, I will be going back to Delo 400. The odor coming in the vents at a stop light or even stop sign is definitely noticeable. Had more than one passenger ask what that smell is. Hate to admit what it is.

Unless there is something different about the 600, I expect that it will be just like my 01 as far as smell on the Delo 400 - for a day or two it smelled after an oil change but then nothing noticeable.

I would say that it smells less than Rotella. Cost a little more than rotella. Is of higher quality than the Mopar stuff(there was a post regarding that). It is recommended by Cummins. I used rotella exclusively in my 01 and then switched to extreme at 85K for easier cold starts. I run the regular VPB in the 03 can say that I can't notice any difference from rotella, haven't done an oil analysis. I think that Delo smells the least of the dinos from what I have read.

Hope that helps.

I just did my first oil change and decided to go with Valvoline Premium Blue because it is recommended by Cummins. I also understand that these engines come from the factory with VPB in them.

Can't comment on smell - I don't notice anything in my truck except occasionally when stopped at a light. And I do not find that offensive.

Hey guys isn't VPB a synthetic, and Duluth, I thought amsoil was the best, I was going to start using it at around 8500 miles, only 3700 so far. tks

I am gonna use the dino. I dont think it is gonna make that much difference I change my oil on average every six weeks. I do have a friend that went to Rotella synthetic and he started consuming oil. Kind of expensive if the engine starts drinking it. But I just got in the truck and the overhead said 102. I believe it. 5w-40 seems awful thin.

I have used PB since day 1. I like it because the bottles have the Cummins logo on them. No smell whatsoever that I've ever noticed.

A smell inside the truck from the oil? I have not noticed any smell inside the cab from oil. Dead skunks on the road, my wife farting, yes, but never oil. Wouldn't that indicate something wrong? Maybe a leak or something?

JA, I just put Rotella Syn in my '96 truck tonight to give it a try, so I will let you know how it does on oil consumption. Especially on a 352,000 mile truck with the weather being well into the 100s lately.

I've run sythetics in all my previous trucks with no increase in consumption. Pouring the Rotella in tonight it didn't seem thin. I did have some trouble with 5w30 Amsoil on my '01, it used some oil an the oil analysis came back with higher wear numbers and viscosity was around 9 as I recall. I blame it on being too thin for 110F weather.

One reason I'm a believer in syn oils is how much cleaner higher-mile engines are when you lift the valve cover.

Yeah, I like the Amsoil, and will likely switch back after this trial run. I figure I might as well try other oils and keep an open mind. Besides, my local Cummins rep is trying to get me to switch to the Valvoline stuff, so he's giving me oil for cost. :)

JARichard,

just for the record, a 5W-40 is not really thin, especially at the operating temperature of your engine. The only time it is "thin", is at (40 C). At the oil operating temp (100 C) it is a 40 grade oil.

Premium Blue

Been using it for 19000 miles(since the beginning).

I have a friend who uses Rotella and I think the Rotella

has a more noticable smell than the Premium Blue.

I've changed my oil between 5-7000; except for my first

oil analysis,(a little more aluminum), my results have been

good--they suggested to let it run a bit longer between

changes.

I'll be changing to a synthetic at 25-30000 and may just

use the Premium Blue 2000, Amsoil, or Royal Purple. Haven't

decided yet--2003 HO QC LB 4WD 2500 VA C2.

:) I have used premium blue in my 03 since December of 02 when i bought it. . Love the oil and run 5000 miles between oil changes and it looks fairly clean when i drain it out. . But there are several types of premium blue oils so stick with the same one. . They look the same but they are not at all the same. .

Hey guys. I just changed my oil for the first time on my 2004. 5 @ 10,000mi, and the oil filter and drain plug weren't any harder to remove than any car I've ever owned. I used regular Rotella, because from what I understand, it's what came in my Cummins 600 from the factory, right? Any opinion on the Mobil Delvac oils? I've heard some good things about them. IMHO, I believe that synthetic oils are a waste of money..... just CHANGE it according to factory specs...

Good to hear you have the first 10,000 on you ride, and I'm sure you are going to get many more out of it, as these Cummins engines are very much up to it!

As far as the oils that come in the engine from the factory, I couldn't't tell you for sure, as my dealer told me that "Mopar" oil came in my 2003, but I really don't know for sure... ... ... ... ... ... . don't really care, as I have a better oil in there now anyway, and I know for sure "Mopar" does not make engine oils anyway. The oil I use is a synthetic, of course. And if you do any studying at all regarding engine oils, you will discover that a high quality group 4 and 5 oil will indeed give much better wear, some articles I have read say as much as 60 percent less wear. That by itself would be beneficial as I see it.

VPB Oil

Cummins put's their highly respected name on the bottle, that's good enough for me. I'm almost at 10,000 now so getting close to my second change, I didn't notice any oil fumes/smell after the first change at 5k. Also, to the best of my knowledge, VPB 15-40 is the factory fill. Anybody know any different for sure??
