Maybe they'll give you a "raincheck" or a coupon to buy a few cases when their warehouse is stocked again. I don't remember seeing a line in their sale ads with a disclaimer like "while supplies last. "

So, with only 4,800 miles on the motor, I should wait to run synthetic?

I was told at the dealership that the new 6. 7L Cummins comes with Synthetic oil already installed, so you would need to continute to use synthetic oil.

I would like to use the less expensive Premium Blue, but if the engins already have synthetic you will need to keep doing so.

How can you tell if the original oil is synthetic or not?

I only have 110 miles on my new truck (which has been at the upfitter for about 2 weeks now) and when it comes time to do an oil change, I do not want to get the incorrect oil.

FATCAT,

Where did you hear that you must continue to use synthetic after you start?

This is the first I've ever heard of such a thing, and I don't think that's right. Please enlighten me.

Thanks,

Loren

I don't believe the new engines come with synthetic engine oil installed. Sounds like another uninformed salesman running his mouth.

For you die hard oil fans out there. That oil test that i have mentioned before was done in one of the TDR issues about three issues ago. Valvonline Premium Blue was recommended by the TDR people to run in our trucks over all other oils. synthetic, rotella, amsoil, and a bunch of others. The TDR people came up with Rotelle on the bottom of the list. I work for Shell and i have no problem telling anybody it sucks

I received an E-mail from Cummins on 8-17-07 and I will include the exact info that I received.

WHAT TYPE OF ENGINE OIL IS REQUIRED FOR THE 6. 7-LITER TURBO DIESEL?

The new cummins 6. 7-liter Turbo Diesel engine requires low-ash engine oil with a maximum 1. 00 mass percent content of sulfated ash. Failure to use this type of oil can result in serious damage to the exhaust aftertreatment system in the vehicle. Cummins Turbo Diesel engines are filled at the factory with Valvoline's Premium Blue engine oil. Owners need to be sure to purchase API-CJ-4 engine oil that meets Cummins Engineering Standard CES 20081, such as Valvoline's Premium Blue. End of Quote.

I did have(can't find it at the moment) where Cummins signed a 5 year contract in 2007 for Valvoline to supply them the Premium Blue CJ-4 oil.

DStephenson,

Thanks. That's good information and also good news since I bought a several year supply of Valvoline Premium Blue.

The message from Cummins makes me wonder... ... could the very few owners who have had problems with their '07. 5 6. 7L ISB engines have been using incorrect oil? Cummins seems to feel very strongly that anything but proper spec oil will cause problems.

I'd guess it is safe to assume the use of LSD fuel would also cause serious problems.

With that being said, If you get your oil changed at the dealer. What oil are they putting in our trucks. Is it Valvoline P. B. ?

Hopefully today, I will be picking up 36gallons from Flying J's.

The oils were evaluated on the additives, not the base oil. All of the CJ oils were at the bottom of the list. The Valvoline PB was CI - I suspect the Valvoline PB CJ would be at the bottom of the list also. Reviewing oils based on the additives and not the quality of the base oil is suspect at best.

That being said, I have been using Shell Rotella CJ for over 200k miles with excellent wear results. However, I would not hesitate to use Valvoline PB CJ. They were out at the Flying J near me yesterday, or I would have picked up a few cases.

Shell Rotella CJ meets Cummins Engineering Standard CES 20081. I suspect all of the major brand CJ oils would meet the standard also, but have not confirmed.
