Well for those that have been watching I did the deed. Valvoline is in and its not cause im too cheep to buy the dealer stuff. I wanted the sucky sucky of the transfer machine.

If my transmission goes you guys will be the 1st to know , ok 2nd, Valvoline would be first. . :-laf . .

Thanks Matt400. I read that document and decided why not ! if they are willing to cover any waranty issues. Like I said earlier I woulndnt mind if while replacing my trans I got a 48re to replace my 47...

I wanted to go this route with the oil change place as they have the transfer machine to suck the fluid out of the torque converter too. . Yes I called all the dealers around me and none of them flush the system, they only drop the pan/change the filter.

You can buy the good stuff at the dealer, and bring it to the shop and have them put it in. I know a lot of people do that for oil changes with Amsoil at places that don't sell Amsoil. They should credit you for the fluid.

Quite some time ago I did some searching about ATF+4. On some message board, I think it was a Dakota message board, someone posted an MSDS for Havoline ATF+4. There were several other comments that Havoline makes the ATF+4 for DC. That is the only somewhat real information that I have found. Having said that, I would not put 100% faith that Havoline makes the ATF+4.

Don't know what the price is now on the ATF+4, but I checked with a parts man friend of mine at DC an he said he could sell it to me for $3. 65 a quart an if I bought it by the gallon a little cheaper. This was last Nov/04 when I last checked with him. What is the going price at the dealership now. I'll need some before long.

Tony

Had my front and rear diff as well as NV5600 serviced by the dealer. Total cost for the fluids was $80. 00. Cheap if you consider a non-warrantee repair.

Had only a little over 30K on the rig, but was getting ready for a long heavy pull. He said the transfer cases were pretty much bullet proof. Suggested I wait till 60K for it's service.

Forgot to mention, my diffs have worked perfectly since day 1. No noise or other problems. The service writer said they've seen a few American Axles back for service. Seems some were not set up properly by American Axle.

The manual transmission was really stiff in the beginning, but seems to have lossened up with use. Also, I guess I'm triple lucky. No injector problems. Engine runs smooth as silk and almost as quiet. Last tank of fuel with combo of country, city, and freeway driving was 19. 6 MPG. :D

It's my observation that using the Egde EZ hurts mileage by about 1 MPG. Perhaps because it's hard to keep my foot out of it.

The only other fluid I know of that specifies for Chrysler products is this one along with Amsoil

Amsoil specifically states ATF+4 but last I checked was more money than the DC stuff.

The Pennzoil stuff says: but that could mean +3 vehicles.

+4 from the Dealer seems like the best route for price and warranty.

IF AMSOIL INC. puts the specification on the label, they are legally bound to stand by their recommendations... ... ... ... ... ..... and they do!

Wayne,

Have there been any cases where an automatic transmission serviced using Amsoil ATF+4-rated oil failed and Amsoil footed the bill for its repair?

Ryan,

When I went to the Amsoil 30th Anniversary (July 2003), they made a statement stating there had never been an oil related failure usung any of their oil products. That is not to say no one ever claimed their product caused some problem! They have had claims, but never one that was proven!

Here's an interesting item from the link Wayne provided above:

THE WARRANTY MAY NOT BE EXTENDED TO COVER:

2. AMSOIL lubricants that have been used ... in applications where the OEM required lubricant standards do not match those stated by AMSOIL INC. without the written approval from AMSOIL INC.

So, using AmsOil ATF in the 48RE or transfer case would be warrantied by AmsOil because AmsOil claims ATF+4 compatability, but using one of it's lubricants in the NV5600 would not be warrantied since AmsOil does not claim to be compatable with Chrysler Part No. 4874464 (Specification MS-9224) for any of it's products as far as I have been able to determine.

If you were to call Amsoil Technical Services 1-715-392-7101 and ask them what fluid to use in the NV-5600, they will tell you to use the series 3000 5W-30 oil in it. I have done that, and have no problems doing so, as they will claim it is compatable, and meets the specifications. After all, they have been in business over 30 years, and I do not beleive they will tell you to use a product in a given application without full testing before giving an approval. ;)
