Thanks Eric, the ability to have a better field of view would be adventageous. Even with hot loaded . 45-70 my max. effective range is maybe 200 yards (probably less) so 2x,3x should be fine. I guess I was struggling mostly with aesthetics as I am used to the look of a receiver mount...



This gun is being setup as a brush gun for deer up to Elk in forested areas of SW Washington. Going hunting with my brother in law this Fall hopefully.

Brush gun? Yup, you'd be best served with th scout setup.

You should see if a friend has one just so that you can try it out.

Target aquizition(sp?) is really fast!

Here's a pic. of the Simmons 8x32 44mm OBJ, within your price range at $ 144. 99. I've owned quite a few of the Simmons scopes over the years and can tell ya, the quality is hard to beat for the price. Defintely a step above Tasco IMHO. While the optics can't compare to the Euro manufactuers, it's very close to a Leupold Vari-X 2.

Steve, thanks for the info on the handcannon, that one you have sounds like a ton of fun to shoot long range. I don't have any barrels for the Encore yet, just the frame. I have a good collection for the Contender frame, the 5. 56mm is a blast to shoot (literally) with the SS 14" barrel and muzzle brake. The 30-30 is kinda a dog, but I have a custom . 35 Remington barrel thats cool with reloads pushing 125 gr . 357 bullets.



I see you are talking scout rifles now. I always wanted Jeff Coopers scout, but the $$$ he wants are insane.

$2500. 00 + back in 1998, don't know if they even make this rifle in this config anymore, way too much for me anyhow. It's built on a Steyr, hence the price I guess.

Ive got a little Ruger 22 mag bolt gun that I have that Simmons scope on. I really like it for shooting small critters and targets.

The Simmons is a good scope and when price is taken into consideration its a good value, but when you hold the Simmons to your eye and the Kahles a few seconds later the price begins to not matter so much.

Example: two years ago in the Challis Idaho area. I was Mulie hunting with a long time friend. He has a Bausch and Lomb scope on his 300 Weatherby in a 3x12x50 and I had a Kahles 2. 5x10x50 that was a tad weaker in high power setting. I was watching a group deer across the canyon with my binos and looking for a buck. I did see two very good deer and was trying to see how much ground shrinkage they might have from that distance. Since my friend had a 300 Weatherby and I had a 7mm Rem Mag I decided to try the big gun out for the shot at the largest buck. After figuring the range at nearly 600 yards I really wanted to use the big gun now. The sun was really starting to shine good on across the canyon and time was running out. I shouldered his gun and could hardly see the deer on the other side clearly. Combination of the sun being over there bright and distance I guess. Knowing the 300 had an advantage at that range I really wanted to try with it.

After trying very hard to get a comfortable rest and see the target clearly I decided to try my gun/scope combo again.

Needless to say, I stayed with the Kahles/7mm and made the shot. Deer was down and we were walking toward him 30 minutes later after I was sure he was not going to try and get up again.



Not sure if the lighting conditions were to blame or what, but I re-enforced what I have known for a long time about good optics.

When the hunt is a big deal like a trophy elk or deer, take the good stuff and increase your odds.

I have two of the Kahles scopes and they are great scopes both came on used guns I bought for the right prices. I am a Leupold scope man when it comes to buy my own scopes. It's really hard to beat there quality and views in all types of conditions.

CDNN has the Jeff Cooper Package Scout w/ case in . 308 for $2099 and in . 376Steyr for $1599. Other non Jeff Cooper configurations for as low as $1099. Still alot of dough but not as bad as you thought. Hope this revelation doesn't get you into trouble with your signifcant other... . :-{}



My wife is actually pretty good about the gun thing, but for others it can be more of a struggle...

I currently have a Burris 6-24 X 50mm on my M-25. It is OK, but I would rather have a nightforce. I have a 300Yd zero, and at that range, the Nightforce is better for making adjustments out to 1000 yards.

Sheperd scope is great IMO. I have one now for a couple years on my 300um, little big for chucks. But a sheperd is made per caliber and believe me mind works. Built for bullet weight and speed then it knows where it will hit at any distance. If you do your part it will lay them in there at great distances. We are planning a trip out to NM at the NRA center there range go to 1000 yards.

I have had two Simmons scopes in the last 5 years and will never have another, both were junk!!!! One had a lense come loose in the scope under recoil from a 30-06 and the other would not make linear adjustments, 4 clicks did not equal 1" at 100 yards with a 1/4 MOA adjustment, one day it might be 3 inches and the next it might have been 3/4". Adjust it and shoot, tap the tube and it would move more, I have never had that with a good scope. Put one on an accurate rifle and see what you think. Never again will I own a Simmons, the quality is just not there. Neither was as bright as a Leupold Vari-X 2 2-7X30 and both were 40mm objectives! You get what you pay for with rifle glass. Burris is better, but not by leaps and bounds. MHO is that you need to buy Leopold Vari-X 2 at a minumum and go up from there.

Ive got a Tasco 6-24X44 World Class Target scope on my custom '98 Mauser actioned, . 22-250 dog gun. I really like the reticule, at has barely visible lins and a 1/8 minute dot. The target knobs and adjustable objective are really nice too. I've not had a problem with the Tasco, being in a light recoiling gun like a 22-250, but I'd've prefered a Leupold. On my big game guns (30-06, 338 Win mag, . 450 Marlin) I've got Leupolds. My $0. 02...
