Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Varying Temperature

Hey fellas,

Every one of these trucks I've seen, the temperature varies way too quickly. Does anyone know a solution to this? I think the main reason for it is based on the fact that the water inlet and outlet is so far away from one another. Putting a factory thermostat helps but doesn't necessarily cure the problem. But I would think there would be something to help it out. I've seen a bunch of these head gaskets leak and I'm guessing its because of how quick the temperature changes. Any thoughts??

Hi Dennis, sounds like you have a 12-valve Cummins! Welcome to TDR. Lemme guess, the temp gauge cycles up and down between about 150 to 190? Very normal, it's the nature of the beast and the best you can do is use a Cummins T-Stat (which has been revised a few times over the years to address this but hasn't ever cured it). Sounds like you've already done this though. . . definitely don't use anything that comes from Schuck's or Auto Zone.

Some 12-valve engines have lasted over a million miles with this problem, amazingly without the needle falling off the temperature gauge, so I wouldn't spend to much time worrying about it :-laf

Start to worry if the cycling stops. If that happens you probably have a thermostat problem. The stock 'stat has a rubber gasket on it that can slip and jam it open a little. Then the engine runs too cool.
