VE Pump ?

A friend of mine is installing a Cummins out of a 91 dodge into his 95 Ford. Yes, the Powerjoke is in need of a new home. The decision to swap the engine was an easy one, better reliability, cheaper horsepower, no expensive electronics to replace and better fuel mileage just to name a few. The engine swap is almost going too easy thanks to the parts from www.fordcummins.com Myself and anyone else helping on the project is not too familiar with the VE pump.

The first question is what is the little round device on the side of the injection pump that has an electrical wire going to it from a sensor in the intake tract behind the intake horn.

The second question is how do you adjust max RPM's. Can you adjust the throttle stop or do you have yo adjust or change parts on the govenor.

The third question is we have installed POD injectors, a 16cm exhaust housing that we had laying around, we have basic instructions on how to adjust the pump, just waiting to get it in the truck first, and a South Bend OFE clutch to handle it all. Is there any other recommended modifications or adjustment that we could benefit from

Thanks

The little round hing on the side is the KSB- cold timing advance. Depending on which 91 you have in there (IC or non), will determine if you HAVE to have it hooked up.

Max RPM adjustment is external- opposite side of the pump from the low idle screw. There are a few spring options for higher revs/ faster response from the governor that you ahve to take off the top off the pump to replace. It is a single spring, anyone who can walk and chew gum can do it.

Set your timing to around 1. 6mm lift, maybe a hair higher if it the non-intercooled variety. I woul dnot recommend going past 1. 7mm. Verify true TDC (dont rely solely on the timing pin) befroe hooking up the indicator.

And you DID recommend gauges, right? minimum 40psi boost, pyro in the manifold.

dpuckett,

The enine was originally intercooledand was attached to an auto transmission. An intercooler from a 1st gen Dodge will get fabbed into the truck.

Gauges have already been bought for the truck. I think of gauges as being a bare necessity so I wasnt really thinking about them when listing the modifications.

Thanks

The later model FORD intercooler would really be a better choice. It's huge in all directions.

Hope you're happy with the power of the cummins over the Flowersmoke. I've got a friend who has a '97 Ford PS and he just stomps all over my '87 Ford Cummins. Mine is more reliable though, at this point.

I am trying to find more time to "FIX THAT"... (I. E. Sad Cummins Power)

I believe there used to be some better "pump mod threads" that had some very nicely detailed instructions and decent photo's, but I can't seem to find some of the earlier VE stuff. Especially concerning the "cone thingee" and the "fuel pin thingee and replacement"... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... . aand I really don't mean to hi jack this thread, just thought the earlier stuff might help or at least it needs to be relived for us VE dummies... ..... I know I'm really kind of scared to open my pump for fear of it not running later.

WHAT? And have someone have to actually look at my ugly old ford with 350 thousand on it, not to mention having to listen to a cummins with a 4" exhaust and NO muffler. WOW, your a brave man and I do appreciate the offer. You do know it's HOT down there and my AC is on the list of things yet to be done. Thanx a bunch for the offer and I may take you up on it, but I gunna at least give it a try myself. I figure if I can build my Willy's flattie from the ground up (the only thing still original on it is MOST of the two frame rails), I can give the VE a go round. Your help with the directions and pictures is sure to have made it easier and helpful.

You guys are model TDR members. It was guys like you that helped me do the conversion in the first place.

The big question is... ..... did all this help STROKER SMOKER, who started this thread?

Dennis from Bagdad, Az... ... ... ... ... .....
