I HAVE A 2000 2500 WITH 155K MILES. I AM STANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD IN THIS SNOW STORM AS MY TRUCK JUST SHUT DOWN. THIS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES ON MY WAY TO WORK TODAY. FIRST TIME I REPLACED THE FUEL FILTER AND THE TRUCK RAN FINE FOR AROUND 25 MILES. (THE OLD FILTER WAS ONLY REPLACED 5K MILES PRIOR. THE SECOND TIME IT SHUT DOWN, I BLED THE WATER SEPERATOR ON THE FUEL FILTER HOUSING, ONLY SOUNDED LIKE AIR COMMING OUT, BUT THEN THE TRUCK STARTED. IT RAN OK FOR ANOTHER 10 MILES AND THEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN. THIS LAST TIME HOWEVER I CAN'T START IT. I HAD IT TOWED TO MY WORK PLACE AND I SPENT THE NIGHT HERE. CAN ANYONE ADVISE ON WHAT I SHOULD DO TO DIAGNOSE THIS PROBLEM?

WHEN I TURN THE KEY ON, IT SOUNDS LIKE NORMAL, FUEL DOES GET TO THE FUEL FILTER. IF I LEAVE THE WATER SEPERATOR BLEEDED OPEN, FUEL PASSES THRU WHEN I TURN THE IGNITION.

SNOWS GETTING DEEP I HOPE I CAN FIX IT TODAY,(SUNDAY) AND GET HOME.

THANKS IN ADVANCE

(FIRST TIME USER, I HOPE I DID THSI CORRECTLY)

I was gonna say the lift pump, but you said it was getting fuel to the filter... right? IF the lift pump is working, bump the starter to hear it run. You may just be sucking air. Did you replace the rubber ring gasket when you replaced the filter? Make sure the cap is real snug on the filter also. Don't overtighten 'cause it's plastic, and being cold will prolly break... good luck.

Tom

I DID REPLACE THE O-RING. SINCE I POSTED THIS 911 CALL, I CRACKED OPEN 3 OF THE INJECTORS AT THE HEAD, AND TURNED THE ENGINE OVER. NO FUEL CAME OUT. DO YOU THINK THE SYSTEM IS AIR BOUND OR MAYBE THE INJECTOR PUMP QUIT?

I HAVE LIMITED TOOL HERE BUT IS THERE SOME SIMPLE DIAGNOSTIC TEST I CAN PERFORM TO RULE OUT THE INJECTOR PUMP?

are you sure the lift pump is working? are you getting any codes? cycle the key on/off 3 times, leaving it on the 3rd time. look at the odometer and see if their are any codes.

P1693 is just a companion code, it's telling you there is a code set. That's all there was??

I've seen a truck where the lift pump would work intermittenly(sp), when it would quit, the pump vanes would block the flow of fuel, so the injection pump couldn't pump it either. I'm stumped, but that's normal...

If your getting fuel to the injection pump, and it won't start, my only GUESS is the injection pump. Hopefully someone will get on that has had a similar problem, and the fix for it.

Sorry I couldn't help more... . good luck

Is the truck indoors now? Where was the last load of fuel purchased? Have you added any additive?

Assuming fuel gelling:

Indoors or a warm weather is the best way to thaw fuel. Fuel bought in the South and dragged to the North will likely gell as we don't have "winter" fuel around here. Too late for additive now, but you can pour a little in when you get it running.

YAHOO I GOT IT STARTED BUT IT WON'T STAY RUNNING. IT MAYBE A FUEL PROBLEM, NOT GELLED BUT AIR IN THE FUEL? WHEN IT STALLS OUT, I BLEED THE WATER SEPERATOR AND I HERE AIR, I TURN THE ENGINE OVER FOR AROUND 20 SECONDS AND IT RESTARTS. IT WILL RUN THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN YOU HERE IT LOOSING IDLE SPEED AND THEN IT STALLS. TEH TRUCK NORMALLY STAYS IN DOORS AT NIGHT. HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF AIR IN THE FUEL?

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP. TRUCK HAS BEEN RUNNING FOR AROUND 15 MINUTES NOW WITH OUT STALLING. HERES HOPING I CAN MAKE IT HOME NOW.

TDR THANKS, THE INFORMATION I FOUND ON THIS SITE, ALONG WITH THE REPLYS TO MY 911 CALL WAS GREAT HELP.

Do the key on off thing again, and wait until the odometer goes back to normal. I have never heard of only having a 1693. My guess is you turned it back off too soon. Give it time to run the full cycle. We need to at least find out what the code was, you may have more pressing problems.

2 things:

1) You may have gotten a bad batch of fuel and that's why the filter change helped. Try cracking the line between the filter and the injector pump to see if fuel is getting through the filter. (if you have one on that overvalved vehicle).

2) Bad fuel wouldn't explain the air in the filter though. You might have a loose or bad hose on the suction side of the fule line from the tank to the lift pump.

I hope this helps.

P. S. Please turn off the caps locks, it's the post version of yelling.

This same issue happened to me. However, mine would shut down I would do the on/off with the lift pump to prime the engine just incase any air entered the engine. I would start cranking the engine over and it wouldn't work unless I pumped the fuel pedal. Then it would finally start. If I ran the truck at about 2,000 rpm for a long period of time it would start cutting out and blow blue smoke. I took it to my friends diesel shop and we found that it was a lift pump that was going bad... . Replaced that and it worked just fine again.
