Checked my codes yesterday by cycling the key three times and got P0500. On a web site I found that it is vehicle speed sensor malfunction. Any one ever seen this before??? Truck runs fine, stops fine, speedo works good, transmission shifts good... . what is the problem?? I have still have the stock tires if that matters.

JR2:

Not to worry. I have set this code on my truck before. You can set it simply by sitting in the driveway and running your RPM's over 1,400 for a specified period of time. Have you done anything like that in the recent past. It will clear itself over time, I think somewhere between 25 and 35 starts.

My speed sensor went out on my 98 auto ctd while on vacation. I was pulling the 5er and everything worked but the speedometer. Still had brakes and lights on the trailer. The dealer in San Angelo, TX. put in a new one for the 100. extended warranty and we were on out way.

I started thinking about it after I posted yesterday and remembered that I have a PS high idler and that is probably what causes the code. Leaving the truck in the driveway for 20 minutes running at 1200 rpm will set the code.

JR2, yes, that is the cause, i have set the same code after using the high idler for an extended time. The code will reset after 40 engine warm up cycles.
