You have one in the rear-end (trucks rear end) on top of the housing. Also have two of them up front... one in each spindle (if you have 4WAL)

In addition to those if your truck is equipped with an automatic it has an OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR located on the left side of the transmission.

the sensor on the driver side of the trans is your vehicle speed sensor. the sensors in the rear axle and front wheel area are wheel speed sensors. both have differnet jobs.

Thanks, need more...

Shoulda asked this before... .

What is the function of the Vehicle Speed Sensor ( driver's side trans. housing location) ??

I have a 0501 code ( Vehicle Speed Sensor range/performance) Have no clue what that means, or whether I should pursue further. No driveability symptoms.

I don't know if this applies to you, but if you have a high Idle box from Practical Solutions and use it much it will set this code. If not I would let it go for a while and see if it goes away, if not you may have a bad sensor.

the vss sends signal to the speedometer and the computer also uses it to calculate other things like dte, torque converter lock up... I replaced mine a while ago and noticed a lot of graphite on the sensor because it is a magnet inside. i think if i would have known this before getting the part i would have cleaned the sensor off and put it back in the trans. because i think the amount of graphite from wear in the trans just made the signal weak.

I just purchased a Superlift Truspeed Speed Sensor and installed it on my 2004, 5. 9 diesel with auto trans. This thing doesn't work for crap. My speedometer only registers 40mph when I am crusing 65+, no matter how much I adjust the unit. Also, when slowing down the speedometer takes a second or so to register 0, when my rig is already stopped. Removed the Superlift speed controller and reconnected the original wires to my ABS controller, speedo is off a bit, but works great!

Going to have the dealer cal the speedo tomorrow.

Just a heads up to others to avoid this particular unit.

Called Superlift tech support 3 times trying to get this unit up and working, pretty much useless on knowledge of 2004 and newer diesel rigs.

Buyer beware!!!!!
