Velcro Sticking to Interior Plastic??

In thinking of ways to mount a brake controller, I've considered using heavy duty, automotive velcro to mount the controller rather than drilling holes in the truck's interior... at least until I make a final decision on location of the controller.



Does anyone know if the factory interior panels lend themselves well to adhesion by sticky things such as heavy duty automotive velcro backing? The stuff is pretty sticky, but I'm not entirely confident that the panels will allow sufficient adhesion of the backing.

I used it to mount my Prodigy. I got a piece about 3x3 at Lowes and it works pretty good but I only mount it when I tow the RV.

I use heavy duty velcro to mount a number of things in the cab. Most of those things have been there for close to two years. Never a problem until this summer. 95-100* temps in direct sunlight has started to take its toll. The glue just finally melted enough to let go on a couple of items. If you get a clean oil free surface it will hold very good on the interior pieces. That is until the temp goes above 120* for hours at a time day after day.

This is encouraging. I like the idea of being able to remove the controller when I don't need it.



Will the velcro backing leave a stain on the plastic once removed, should I ever do so to prep the truck for resale?

Not sure, but I think you can remove the glue using isopropyl rubbing alcohol on a solf cloth.

I would not use acetone or MEK.

I tried to velcro mine on the dash panel and it held for about two weeks, first time it got hot it fell off. I knew where I wanted it so I mounted it with two small screws and never looked back.

I tried to use the heavy duty industrial velcro from Home Depot to mount a lighter adapter (gives three outlets instead of one). It worked great until the interior temps got into the 120's. The adhesive came off clean it just couldn't handle the heat. My only concern over a long term application would be a lack of sun fade under the velcro. I resorted to drilling holes but in my Mega Cab I was able to mount them in such a way that if I ever take them out the holes will not be visible unless your head is in the cupholders!

I mounted my Prodigy to the lower panel on the drivers side, screwed the bracket on, figured if I ever really wanted I could get a new panel if for some reason I wanted to remove the controller, I would not want to risk it falling off while towing.
