door locks hanging up?

On the front edge of my doors are slots that appear to be some sort of vents. They are open to the inside of the front fenders. The slots have been covered with some sort of tape matieral since I have owned the truck. The question I have is are these supposed to be open? What would be the purpose of these? There are two sets of these on each door.

Yea. I wanna know 2.

I have noticed that when I close a door on the 90, with all other doors/windows closed, I have to SLAM the thing  If there is another door/window open, it closes like it's on needle rollers

Air lock???

The vents may/may not have anything to do with this. My 90 has the vents open and the 92 has the vents taped over with very heavy black stuff.

The tape is factory. If your doors don't close well, they probably need the latch and link mechanism relubed. There is a plastic vent looking insert on the door edge, over the latch mechanism which can be removed. Easy access to lube the latch and links. The hinges also wear to the point that the latch post/striker isn't correctly set. You probably need new striker pins as well since the cheesy plastic bushing will fail rather quickly.

I've wondered that too, since mine (90) blows cold air in through the felts and the door handle when moving. I thought about taping or in some other way covering them...

I always thought they were for fresh air. Mine I tape over in the winter time to stop the air blowing in through the handle, in the summer I take it off.

Oh and in the winter the doors are harder to close because there is no where for the air to escape easily. Just my . 02

EVERY 72-93 Dodge truck I have been in has done this. I just thought it was normal.....

I have had the same thing happen on the 89.

It doesn't make any sense, it can't be air tight BUT, I have to slam the door unless the window is down or the other door is open.

I thought it was just me.

No, it's not you. It's the "Tugboatphil syndrome". Like I mentioned earlier, I don't think it's a wear problem, I "THINK" it's an "AIR" problem cuz w/a wondow OPEN, the doors close like they are on needle rollers. Which means VERY easily.

I have trained the wife in this phenomona becasue I HATE to slam the doors. She knows, that if a door or window is open she can simply pull the door shut and not have to slam it.

No, Scott. That's not a mechanical condition. You'll find Tugboatphil Syndrome in one of those large mental disease books. Look in the chapter titled, "Paranoid, Psychotic, Hysterical, Dementia. "

On my 87 Ramcharger, when I close the drivers door with the windows closed, it pushes the passenger door open about 1/2"
