They do provide some shade, making it a bit darker inside the truck, but not much.
There is quite a bit less noise with the window cracked at highway speeds. They will also allow you to have the window cracked in the rain. Whether you're driving or the truck is parked and locked, the rain can't get in.
Don't try it in the winter though. They won't even slow down blowing snow.
