Does anyone know of a vertical shaft air-cooled diesel engine? I am looking to find one to put on a lawnmower if there is such an animal. I am a true diesel nut, still in the making. I just bought a new Yanmar 6 horsepower air cooled electric start diesel engine and an Acme 8 horsepower air cooled rope start air cooled diesel engine. Both have horizontal shafts though. I am going to put the 8 horse on a rear tine tiller and the 6 horse on a log splitter I plan to build. I am also considering a 4. 2 horsepower diesel for a front tine tiller. To complete my power equipment conversion to diesel, I need a vertical shaft engine for a push mower. Any help or suggestions?

Thanks, John

I've never seen one, but I hope you find one. I'll be in the market for a walk-behind mower in the spring.

Nothing would be cooler than a Snapper HI-VAC (my personal favorite mower brand... they're not the best, but they pick up leaves like it's nobody's business!) with a diesel!

Dieselnut I found 2 or 3 different makes of vertical shaft aluminum air cooled diesels in the 3. 5-5 HP range. They were all direct injection, around 21:1 compression ratio and recoil starter. They were only about 5lbs heavier than their gas counterparts. I was seriously considering it because my dieselized spark-ignited Briggs & Stratton push mower always took some fussing to get fired up.

Supersonic, I have seen literature on that engine you posted the picture of. it is a direct replacement for the V-twin Kohler gas units they use on many of the zero turn mowers. That is a SWEET engine! Liquid cooled in the space of an air cooled gasser! Will definately open up the choices for diesel engines on those type mowers. Yanmar is a great engine. I have several of their air cooled horzontal engines. I have heard Hatz is a good one too, from Germany. Dan, I will take your suggestion on contacting Northern Tool. We buy a lot of equipment and supplies from them for our shop.

Vaughn, I will let you know what I figure out because I, too, would love a diesel push mower to replace my 1981 model 2-stroke lawn boy which is "getting tired". I will just buy a good mower deck and go from there. Thanks for the help yall!

Dan. Update: I just checked out the Hatz website you posted the link to and it says the "V" (vertical shaft) engines are "soon available". I will keep a look out and then contact Northern Tool and let yall know.

What is the web address of E-Bay in Australia? I did not know there was such a thing! I would like to check it out if you said there might be some engines available there. Not interested in the throw away chinese things though. Want to stick with a reputable company like Yanmar, Kubota, Hatz, Fuji, etc...
