Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Very Bad Engine Oil Leak

I have a 98. 5 24v, I just serviced the truck and went on a trip to Pascagoula, MS from Atlanta, Ga. When I got down there the truck was about one gallon low on engine oil, there was alot of oil under the body. I took it pretty easy 65 or so. The rear main was replaced at 131,000. It has 138,000 on it now. I am thinking it is coming from higher up, maybe a oil port or head gasket.

Did you make sure the gasket for the old oil filter went with the old oil filter?

I would pressure wash the engine so you can determine the exact source of the oil leak. If it is the head gasket you might be able to slow it down by line torqueing the head bolts down some... ... .

I wouldn't recommend retorqueing the OEM headbolts... ...

Check the front crankshaft oil seal. I had a minor leak in mine and it was hard to pinpoint. The whole bottom of the truck and front of engine had oil all over. That serpentine belt can sure throw the oil around. After getting everything cleaned off as much as possible made it easier to locate.

I just replaced the vaccum pump seals. Check that. I had oil from front to back of my truck.

I lost a quart in 35 mi. turned out to be front gear cover seal. Sleeved and replaced crankshaft seal in the process.

I had the filter loosen on my 98 once. made quite a mess.

I wouldn't recommend retorqueing the OEM headbolts... ...

Why is that? Bolt stretch concerns?


When my headgasket went it looked like i ran into a 55 gallon drum of oil, from front to back... ...

If it IS the head gasket do yourself a favor and don't use the bolts, get studs. 12mm ARP headstuds are added insurance.

If the leak is coming from the drivers side of the engine, there is a cover plate below the intake manifold that covers the tappit/lifter area on the block that may be your source. I have twice had a problem with this. The first time it was just a slight drip and I was able to get it fixed on warranty. But the second time the oil was just pouring out. Another motorist flagged me down and I was able to stop before any damage was done. The gasket behind this plate had blown out. I had to pay to get it fixed as I was away from home and needed the truck, of course I was out of warranty.

There is also the oil pressure sensor/switch on the drivers side, which is just below the ECM. I think an 'O' ring seals this.

My truck is a 2001 24V.
