Alot of misinformation out there.

If in doubt call each company and ask them point blank, is it group 3 or group 4 oil.

Call the companies themselves, do not rely on distributors or vendors or the bottle.

If it's wrong, one would think they could be liable for fasle statements... . But since it still exists I'm left wondering.

Please don't make the mistake of thinking that, just because something's in print, it must therefore be true. Mobil I is a Group 4 PAO base stock lubricating oil. That's why they sued Castrol over Castrol's labeling of their Group 3 oil as "synthetic".

Rusty

It states that AFTER MOBIL LOST the lawsuit, they then changed over to the group III because they could get away with it... . AS I RECALL, that is about the period that Mobil 1 DID CHANGE their advertising and TITLE of their oil..... with the TRI SYN or whatever it says on the bottle.

I'm not convinced that the article is right, but I'm not convinced it's wrong either. I'm a Mobil 1 user in all my vehicles except my Cummins so... . I'm not coming from a bias of amsoil or any other oil.

ATV Outdoor net also ran an article about how tree huggers were rigging booby traps in the woods to catch ATVers. Even described in great detail how to make these Vietnam style traps and claimed one of the environmental groups published a manual on how to make ATV traps.

Turned out the information existed only in the mind of the guy who wrote the article and there had been absolutely no reports of any people being trapped.

The author was also a founder/full time writer for outdoor net.

Their creditability with me went to hell after that.

This quote is directly from M1's site, www.mobil1.com.

"Mobil 1® with SuperSyn™ uses high-performance fluids, including polyalphaolefins (PAOs), along with a proprietary system of additives. "

I used Mobil 1 oil for many years in a variety of gasser vehicles and loved it. I noticed the quality degraded after they went to the SuperSyn label. I switched the mommy van over to Amsoil.

The phrase "... uses high-performance fluids, including polyalphaolefins (PAOs), ... " tells me they are blending.

The Cummins gets the HD diesel rated Mobil product, Delvac 1. I just picked up another case at local supplier. Oustanding product in my book.

Of course they are blending they are a mfg. :)

Seriously though, originally I read that statement and thought that it could be interupted in the same way. Having read through the entire M1 site it becomes apparent that the M1 is not a blend. They address the idea of blends and state that M1 is not. Here is another quote that should have followed the first one:

"Each Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ viscosity grade uses a unique combination of synthetic fluids and selected additives in order to tailor the viscosity grade to its specific application. "

I guess one could still read this as to say that they are blending Group III and IV, but I personally do not feel this is the case.

Mobil was one of the originators for producing PAO base stocks. I believe they were the first big oil company to step forward and promote synthetic to the public after producing it many years for other markets. I first used it back in the late 70's and saw the advantages.

Mobil would loose a lot by stepping back and blending.

Something just didn't work in the mommy van, I guess.

I see it that marketing has ruined the synthetic market. Look at the Valvoline power steering fluid many in the TDR use. The labeling misled many into believing it was full synthetic. Closer examination reveals synthetic additives in a conventional base stock. Never the less, it is still a very good product.

Mobil 1 guy now Royal Purple user

I talked to the Mobil 1, the Amsoil tech, and a Royal Purple engineer and have reassuring news. I am a retired Exxon Mobil Product coordinator. Mobil1 synthetics are a full catagory PAO 4 & 5 blend stock product and API certified and Delvac 1 is as advertised. Royal Purple is a PAO catagory 4 blendstock API certified synthetic and is a great product as well. Amsoil is not fully API certified on some of their products for some undetermined reason that is well founded to those who sell oil for a living, but I don't. Their synthetic heavy duty deisel marine 15w-40w is not but has proven to be a good oil for a long time now. I know that this is a real hot spot and I do think that they probably would say that they do not have any catagory 3 oil in their blendstock for this product. I do know for sure in writing that Mobil1 and Royal Purple do not have cat 3 blend in their oils and that their additive packages are excellent. ;)

My pleasure.

Thank you Klenger but I am sure there is great fun to be had by all in the details as you know how many opinions are out there. I really like the Royal Purple Technology but that is just my opinion and because I have made a new friend with a fellow oil patch engineer over there. The rest of these other aforementioned products are very good as well. He is a stand up guy and they really are that good just like the others.
