2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Very Loud Annoying Squealing

#@$%!I have a very loud and annoying squealing coming from my drivetrain. I have visually inspected the undercarriage and can see nothing. I have pulled all the wheels and brakes and have found nothing that might be making the noise. It is definately related to movement. I can go down the road and put the clutch in to coast and the volume of squealing is relative to speed. I can step on the brakes and it does not stop the squealing. I am hoping someone can send me in the right direction. I dont know if it is carrier bearing, wheel bearings or something else. All suggestions will be appreciated. My main concern is that it is something major that will leave me on the side of the road.

My truck just started doing the same thing, but mine seems to be related to something around the clutch. If I push the clutch in mine will go away. Does yours have anything to do with pushing in the clutch? Mine also does it while sitting still to. Just a thought.

I had a similiar noise. I pulled the driveshaft to check the carrier bearing & found nothing wrong with it. After reinstalling the shaft, the noise was gone. Your guess is as good as mine.

Thanks for the replies. At least your ideas coincide with mine as to the carrier bearing, universal joints or wheel bearings.

No, turning doesn't seem to affect the noise. I got a post from someone who said they had the exact same problem and it turned out to be the U joint at the carrier bearing.

John, your truck has the could-be's, as other have said. If the squeak is fairly constant, I'd suspect the carrier bearing. If it has a periodicity to it, I'd suspect a u-joint, since the bad joint 'turns' only when going through horizontal. FWIW, the carrier bearing in my F150 would squeal badly, and constantly, when it had failed. The carrier bearing in my 2500 has not yet failed in 230K miles. In difference, my '71 Plymouth wagon once had a bad front u-joint. It went squeak-squeak-squeak loudly, louder as load increased, and faster as speed increased. And it vibrated because it was no longer properly centered (or balanced).

If you have a rear slider, open it. If the squeal is much louder, you can almost be assured it's the carrier bearing.

Is there a chance you could hit each suspected component with a shot of WD40 then go for a short test drive? I realize this is just a simple, temporary fix, but it might just help you isolate which part is causing the noise if it will suppress it a little if it can get a bit of lubrication.

Might try this also
