A retired gentleman placed an ad in our local shopper paper to sell his truck and his 5er. I am not impressed with his camper but I am with his truck. Hey out there in TDR land, one of you is looking for this truck: 1998 2500 QC SB 2wd Cummins/5 speed/3:54s and genuwine cowhide interior. Truck has 60K and 5K on new tires. Color is driftwood and gray leather. Bone stock. I think something around $17K would buy the truck. If anyone is interested, email or call me and I'll get you in touch with him. He only lives about 4 miles from my dealership and I'll be glad to look at it for you. I am only going to be in town for 1 more day and then I'm off to the left coast on a buying trip.

Should make a fine rig for someone

That truck is just what I'd be looking for if I was in the market for a used rig. Especially if it was a 12V. There are not very many '98 2wd shortys running around, let alone any version.

I still remember my local dealer telling me how completely useless a shortbed 2wd Dodge/Cummins would be and how bad it would buck on the freeway, and why, why on earth would I ever want one?? Well I love my combo and would go 2wd shortbed again in a heartbeat. It rides great, it's easy to park, gets good mileage, weighs less, and has 2 fewer expensive components to maintain or break. It sits lower and takes corners a little better, and has gotten me over many a snowy mountain pass. It's great to see this flavor of Dodge/Cummins is gaining popularity among the TDR crowd, at least compared to what you normally see out on the highway.

I would have to agree the the '98 12V is a rare truck and I am fortunate enough to own one:D Mine is a LB and the reason I went for the long bed, is because I tow a 5vr and this eliminates the possibility of jack knifing the 5vr into the back of the cab when turning very tightly... . Yes, I know that many people tow 5vr's with short beds, I have done this in the past, but for me the long box is better for my situation.

Additionally, I do not have a need for 4wd and the 2wd trucks can actually haul more weight and I think they ride better... plus less maintenance and better fuel economy.

You don't see many 2wd on the lots and when I went to order mine, I had a tough decision to make. I knew I wanted the '98 for the newly designed interior, but should I wait and get the 24V or should I get the tried and proven 12V. Well, you can see in my signature what my decision was and have NO regrets buying the last model year 12V, which has turned out to be quite the coveted model to have.

BTW - This is not intended to be a jab at the 24V owners, that is also a fine truck as several friends and family members own them. My brother has an '01. 5 twin to my truck, and his truck in stock condition is an awesome performer, I have even considered trading my 12V in for an '01. 5 or '02 because I have been so impressed with his truck in stock form.

One more vote for 2WD Shorties

I had already sat down with a salesman and mock-ordered the truck I wanted, set up with the options I wanted, for the reasons I wanted, in order to get an idea of what it was gonna cost and all he was waiting for was my OK to put the order in. 2 weeks later, while I was still getting up the nerve to do so, an Intense Blue Sport showed up on the lot, with,,,,,,,,,,,,a Cummins. Everything on the truck was exactly what I wanted other than it was blue and not black, and had options I wouldn't have ordered because of the added cost. But this one was cheaper because it was an untitled 99 that had been used by someone at DC for about 2300 miles. I have been very happy with the 2WD and short box because that's what I wanted to start with and I have no regrets. I feel that if I get the 5er jack-knifed hard enough to touch the cab,,,,,,,,,,, it's putting way too much stress on the hitch and/or axels on the trailer by dragging them sideways. And as a daily driver,,,,,,,,,,,, it sure is alot easier to park in the lot at work. :D :D If I need to go somewhere that requires 4WD,,,,,,,,,,, I'll take the little CJ5 sitting in the driveway. :-laf :D

I looked for my 98 for 6 months at dealers and on the internet. I had three different truck brokers tell me that if I found one it would cost me $4K more than a comparable 98. 5. They were almost right. I chased mine from Virginia to south Georgia before I bought it. Someone bought it in Va just before I could get there to buy it. Apparently, he put a slide in on it and drove to Florida with it and then sold or traded it.

I bought it from a VW dealer in Ga who also used to be a Dodge salesman and carried a few diesel trucks. When I showed him the picture of the truck off the internet his mouth dropped open. He had bought it at a sale and said he new nothing of it's history.

I bought the truck with a little anxiety, but it has done great for 20k miles.

The 98 12 V is the best of both worlds in my opinion. I can't wait to add the TST plate. Then it will be perfect.

One of our members sent me a PM and I sent him the man's phone #. I am out in Kommiefornia moving my daughter back to Texas. (she is a member of American Mobile Nurses) So I don't know if he was able to make a deal or not. Hope so, sounded like a nice truck.

Got one too!

Found mine without looking, it was in real good shape and had 64k on it, I finally gave 17,900 for it and never looked back and wouldn't take 20k for it now, I just love this truck too much.

I found my ShortBed 5speed Cummins truck at a land rover dealer of all places! The guy had traded it in for a 80K Land Rover lol. Kind of an odd change in vehicles if you ask me, But he never used this thing to tow or haul anything I can tell you that. The LR dealer let it go for $2500 under trade value so I know they raked him over the coals on his trade

that's the truck i wanted....

I wanted a 12v, 4x4, dually. That costs TOO much so I got a 24v 2x4 short box. I wish it had a 12v in it almost everyday. :(

If I was even thinking about a new truck, I would call this guy in a heart beat.

If I only had the $$$

I agree, that would be my dream BOMBer truck. Imagine... 500 RWHP in a short bed 2500. I'd keep it low profile, placing the single 6" exhaust under the bed and in front of the rear tire  . Gauges would be stealth as well. Twin turbos and a NOS kit as well as a racing P pump. Hey, I can dream :) .

My 98 12V QC SB is a great riding truck. The only way I will get rid of this truck is if someone totals it out (and then I would want to rebuild it) I just rolled 95K miles, and I think this is the best truck out there. I would like to think that I deserved this since my last truck was a Cheby. I hope I can find another 98 12V with low miles after I roll 400K on this one :D
