Vibrating Tow Mirrors

Does the mirror glass in any of your tow mirrors vibrate folded out into tow configuration? I mean the stock ones, not aftermarket.



They sure do in mine! They vibrate bad enough that it can be hard to see what's behind you at a distance. The dealer insists they're fine and refuses to replace them.



My '01 had them (the non-power version) and the left one did this, I complained and it was replaced, and it didn't vibrate again. The passenger one never did. Of course I told the dealer this and they ignored it.



So I'm wondering if this is typical for these things. If not, then I will continue to pester them about it.

On my manual ones there is double sided tape holding the glass in and the tape had come loose causing them to vibrate. I squirted a little RTV in there and taped them in place for a day and all was fine. Not only does the RTV act as a glue but it may act as a vibration damper like on disk brakes.

My right one vibrates to the point that it is useless. I ask the selling dealer if he could replace it and didn't get a reasonable answer so just thought I would replace both with after market mirrors when they become available for the '03. Recently I was at another dealer for filters and ask if anyone had complained about the shaking mirrors. The service manger said yes. I told him my right one was real bad on wash-board roads. He took my VIN number and said to call him Tuesday to see if it was in. When I called he said they were on backorder and would be available again on OCT 2nd. If your selling dealer won't replace the mirrors try another dealer, he might just do it.

My right mirror vibrates as well. Took it to the dealer and they ordered me a new one. It just came in and will be replaced next week. It must be a vendor issue because the left one is OK. Of course they have to replace the whole mirror not just repair it with better adhesive or double face tape. Jim

I had the problem with my right mirror and told the selling dealer.

They ordered me a new one with out any trouble but it did take about 3 weeks to come in. Now that it's been replaced it is fine.

Mine only seems to vibrate in the tow position. Not real bad, but it can be annoying.

I think they vibrate so bad because when they are flipped out, they are right in the "bow-wake" of the truck (where the air is pushed from the front end). You'll get huge bug collections there because of this. I think it's the turbulence along this air line that causes all the fluttering (doesn't do it in the down position because it's out of the airstream).



I've thought about cramming a piece of foam rubber along an edge to dampen it a bit. But, it hasn't bothered me enough to follow through.



BTW, the glass clips in (not taped, glued, etc. ). It may be possible to tighten the clips, but I don't think it will help anything (because the problem is still the turbulent air).

My problem comes at 10 MPH on up to 40 MPH and that's as fast as I go on these wash-board roads so it's definitely not a slip stream problem in my case.

Same problem, dealer replaced it under warranty, no hassle. The new one works fine.

I'm on my 3rd set (including original ones), they don't vibrate now in no-tow mode but do a little when flipped up. Not as bad as before, you couldn't see anything out of the first two sets. Maybe these will last .

My RH mirror did this, and I simply tightned the mounting nuts, and the vibration went away. One of the nuts was only finger tight!

Just installed my new tow mirrors, took about 10 mins per side



Can't wait to see how well they work and see how much they might vib. while driving. My other truck you couldn't't see out of the mirrors unless you were stopped and when I put the mirror extenders on to tow... ... NO WAY!!!! So we will see how she goes!!

As I stated before it is taped in, in fact just the other day the convex mirror on the drivers side fell off but I didn't notice it until I got to work, luckily when I got back home it was laying in the driveway. This mirror has never been touched since it came from the factory, look at the proof as to how they are held in. The rectangular part is the same way. If your mirrors are loose you need to determine if it is the mirror internals or the glass seperating from the backing plate.

Your truck is a 2nd gen, right? Maybe the 3rd gens use clips?

I had my passenger side mirror replaced due to vibration. Couldn't see anything even on a smooth highway. They replaced it from the door out, whole new unit. Seemed the detent was weak where the arm was supposed to lock in.



I've not been given any grief from my dealer so far!
