I've been noticing a vibration in the steering wheel and shift lever of the '03 HO 6 speed 3/4 Ton truck and I'm trying to track it down. The vibration occurs at idle while not moving so I know it's related to either the engine or one of the rotating parts attached to it such as the power steering pump, alternator etc. I took the truck to the dealer this morning and it turns out that a new truck we went and started had the same vibration so it must be typical for these trucks. I would have bet a rotating part was out of balance but I guess not. Does anyone out there have any information on this? The truck has 15,000 miles on it and I would have bet money I wasn't getting the vibration in the steering wheel for the first 14,000 miles but the fact that the new truck has the same vibration has got me stumped. The engine itself appears to be running smoothly which leads me to think it's a different rotating part.

Terry,

There are many things that you can do to minimize the vibration and noise. You may want to do a search using key words as "vibration" and "drone" as many threads exist with useful information. My truck had the same issue and is now almost nonexistent as a result of a few changes thanks to the threads.

P. S. they may be old threads so you might want to go back a bit (i. e. , >30 days)

Good luck

How do I find this info. I'm very frustrated and my truck has been at the dealership for two days now for this very reason... . going on three days tomorrow. Please share some of the things you have done to solve the problem. I'm almost desperate.....

rolars there will be a remedy just have to be patient. one thing i did was when i added larger tires it got me out of the 2100 rpm range so i can drive the interstate without the buzz in my hands

Simply click on the "search forums" button from the main menu and type "drone vibration" in the "search by keyword" cell and hit "enter". Several threads will appear.

Many of the threads I've read have to do with noise and vibration generated while driving. I feel vibration in the steering wheel and the seat while idling at a stand still. When I put my hand on the air horn I feel this same vibration. It seems more intense when I reach down and grab the power steering hoses close to the steering box. As I said earlier the dealership drove a new truck over and opened the hood and I felt the exact same vibration when I set my hand on the engine. It's baffeling to me that the engineers in Detroit would conclude that this vibration was normal/acceptable. It just doesn't seem like I should feel a buzzing in my hands due solely from the inherent vibration of the motor and rotating accessories. I'm going to try running the engine with the serpentine belt removed this weekend and see if this changes anything.

You know, I've been having the same thoughts about the belt being too tight. What if the belt is being manufactered too small. The idler pulley wouldn't be able to fix that, it couldn't back off enough. I wonder if a larger belt would allow the idler to properly tension the belt..... hmmm.....
