I was reading this awhile ago in TDR issue # 18. It was recommended that us guys with the 160,175,180 HP engines that are BOMBED swap the OE damper for a 215HP one. The 215 one is noticably larger and will absorb the stronger power impulses and torque which is delivered by the now higher output engine. Changing dampers is straight forward. Need a 15mm socket & Torque wrench. No need for a puller. No keyway. 4 bolts & reposition the tach sensor.

The 215HP Balancer is Cummins Part # 3924435

I Electronic mailed MOPAR4LESS for a price.

I`ll probably faint when I see the price #ad

I'll be interested in the price. I have been looking for a damper for my 215 for some time as mine was broken. I have only been able to find one for a 89 and was wondering if this would work. Guess I'll have to order TDR #18. Also noticed damper on front driveline yolk. Any idea of it's purpose? The local driveline maker tells me I don't need it and they knock them off all the time, but I figure DC wouldn't have put it on if it wasn't needed.

The damper on the drive shaft yoke on 5sp. is to help limit the gear rattle & make the trans. live a little longer. Under low rpm, hard acceleration, the firing pulses' of the 6 cyl. engine rattle the gear teeth against each other. This damper seems to help. I put one on my rig, as well as a fluid damper on the front of the engine.

Well the 215 HP balancer is D/C P #4746693

Price: $150. 00 #ad
Not bad compared to the price of a Fluidampr. Not nearly as good either.

I wonder if its cheaper from Cummins?

A nice used one would be fine too.

The fluid damper is made by a company in Buffalo N. Y. A couple of years ago I called them. They said they only make the dampers for the big Cummins- N-14 etc. I was talking with a design engineer, and he said if I sent him a sketch w/dims. ,he would find something I could adapt. I never took him up on it though.
The one I ended up using came off a 4-71 Detroit. I used a crank pully from a 4 cyl. Cummins, made a adapter in front of it, and bolted the bal. to it. These fluid bal. do not have notches on the O. D. for the R. P. M. sensor,in my app. I don't need them.
If you want to call them i'll find their phone # and get back.

HEMI DART: (How do you get the little R in the O?) If you read my post about getting a Vibration after installing a #8 plate I would be interested if others that have increased HP have gotten the same thing. I called Mark Chapple from TST and he didn't think that the fuel plate caused the vibration and the heavier dampener would not help. Also talked to Joesph Donnely about the vibration and couldn't come up with a sure answer on the phone. I will be interested if the vibration level goes down after you install the larger Harmonic Balancer. I have checked the flywheel for alignment, Removed fan belt to rule out all the moving parts on the front. I'm going to check valve clearance today. Also slide the fuel plate back to stock position and try that. Any other suggestion would be apreaciated.

Follow Up::: Checked valves and found #5 intake 2thousands off all the rest ok. Ran engine, still vibrated. Slid #8 plate back to the center postion (Where the stock plate was) and centered the AFC housing. BINGO!! Runs much smoother. I'm guessing that the heavier 215 hormonic dampener will help this situation. Hope someone tries and Posts the results. #ad

Hi Gene,

I`m pretty sure you have the "big" 215 HP Harmonic balancer on your truck now. Even if you had a smaller one, I agree with Mark & Joe, I doubt very much it is the problem.

Did you check your universal joints on your driveshaft? If they are worn , they could cause a vibration. You slid the AFC housing back to the center, and it runs much better.

You have the good fuel pump, so the infamous "low speed skip" (consider yourself lucky #ad
) shouldn`t be the problem.

Have you cleaned the fuel Pre-Filter? Maybe a bad injector? I am stumped.

To get the ®¾½™€¿º, go the Windows 98 "help". Find the "charactor map" Copy & paste off that.

I just ordered my balancer from Mopar4less. Went outside and looked at mine. Its pretty good sized already. Appears larger than the 160 balancer in the TDR article. I wonder if just the 160 hp engine has the small one? And the 175,180,185 & 215 all use the same one? #ad

My 1995 Cummins Engine Parts catalog has the same part # for the 175 HP balancer as the 215 HP balancer. #ad

Say it ain`t so

HEMI®Dart did quick glance at manual in "engine section" doesn't even mention how to remove, but it is mention for timing puposes. Was looking to see if differnt size than 180 hp engine. No specs on it.

Gene-C If your trying to get HEMI®Dart's
handle correct here is easy way.
1. Put arrow on name
2. Click left side of mouse drag arrow
(this highlights name)
3. Holding arrow on highlighted part

6. Right click- box appears-
7. Left click on "paste"
8. If all goes well handle should appear as you saw it last.

Has anybody have time today to measure the OD of your vibration damper?

My 175 HP engine measures approx. 9 1/2" at its widest.

I`m pretty sure the 215 HP damper is the same.

I have a '95 180hp (wife's truck) and a '96 215hp truck. They measure (about 9 3/8 dia. ) and look the same. The thickness and the recessed area are identical. Hope this helps some.

HEMI DART: I slid both the fuel plate and the AFC housing back to the center position. The vibration was there at the idle position so that rules out the drive train. I just hauled the Fer on a weekend trip and it ran fine. Sure could use the extra twenty HP or so that i would gain with the plate forward. I will play with it some more and try and find out whats up. I'll measure my balancer and see if I have the larger one.

Measured my Harmonic Balancer and it is 9 1/2 inch by 7/8 inch thick. If there is a larger one I would love to know.

Gene, You have the largest balancer available for the 12V. You could try to mount this Viscous Damper. I`ll bet it would clean up your vibration... ... ... . LOL #ad

I emailed a couple of companies to see if the make a Viscous Damper for the 5. 9L.

So whats the conclusion,do we need to change to the larger damper? I know mine is the small one 160hp.

You guys should try to find a marine damper. From what I'm told, they make 370 HP. If there is a larger one, that would be it... I suppose.
