Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Oil Change ?

I am having trouble getting the bolts out of the vibration dampner. I have an automatic transmission so crank spins when

I try to losen bolts. I got one loose with a impact wrench with a swivel on it. but I could not get the rest loose and don't want to bugger up the bolt heads. It looks like I will need the barring tool.

My question is where do you insert the barring tool and how

do you hold that while removing the dampner bolts? Also

can I rotate the engine till I can insert the timing pin and use

that to stop the rotation or is it too weak?

DO NOT USE THE TIMING PIN!! You will damage it if you use that to hold the engine from turning over. Use the barring tool and the hole where you insert it is on the passenger side of the bellhousing to the right of the down pipe if your looking from the front of the truck. You'll probably need a second person to hold the barring tool while you break the damper bolts loose. I can't remember the link that shows an illustration for you where the barring tool hole is located, but maybe someone can post it.

As I recall, from when I did the KPD fix there are 4 bolts on the vibration Dampener. I used a steel bar or perhaps a long heavy duty screw driver and put it under one bolt and over another, then loosened the others a little, and then all around and loosened them all.

The barring tool goes into a hole covered by a rubber plug on the lower passenger side of the bell housing (to engage the flywheel I believe).

You do not have to hold the barring tool to prevent the motor from turning over. Once it is inserted, the motor will not turn. Snap - On sells them.
