drivetrain noise from bad bellhousing?

My son-in-law purchased a 92 4 door 4x4 non-dually auto with 162k on the clock. He changed out the u-joints but still has a vibration at about 40mph and again at around 65-70mph. His mechanic told him that maybe the driveline should be balanced or it may be in the transmission (some metal filings when they change the transmission oil). Any ideas? He also wants to do a mild update to the engine but really has no concept of where to start or what makes the most sense in bang for the buck. With a first generation, I don't either. The truck is clean for a 92 and seems to start and run well and doesn't use oil. Any advice from you veterans would be appreciated.

I'm betting that has a two-piece drivshaft with a carrier bearing near the back of the cab? I'd look into that. With the wheels chocked, put the truck in nuetral and see if you can push/pull the driveshaft around in that rubber carrier sadlle. If you can move it easily, that's your culprit.

Driveshaft is a good place to start. A stiff U-joint can cause a vibration, as well. And if it's lost a weight somewhere, it could be out of balance... ... .

Is it an auto or standard? Any oil leaks? Usually, the transmission won't cause a vibration at all times. I'd go more for the rear end, starting with tires. A jack stand is a good place to start, looking for a tire out of balance or that has a seperation. There are lots of possibilities, so check those and get back to us, if you can't find it.

If one of the front hubs are sticking it could be the front driveline CV .

Just so that we know what were talking about , you claim this truck is a "4 door" ??? in 92 they dont excist stock unless your talking about a club cab ?????

Sorry for the late reply, just got back from a short trip. I was indeed in error on the 4 door description. It is an extended cab. Auto transmission. It doesnt vibrate at all speeds, just around 40 then 65-70. We'll check the possible driveline and rear end/tire issues. No oil leaks related to drivetrain/transmission. Thanks and I'll keep you posted.

Check the u joints very closely. Any play at all they are bad. I had any joint in my truck that vibrated at those speeds it had the tiniest amount of play. Upon disassembly I found the needles had just started to groove the cross bearing surface.
