Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) VIN ID for 12-valve engine?

I am shopping for a 98 12-valve, and many ads do not list whether its a 24 or 12 valve, but do list the VIN number...



Anyone know how to tell which engine it has based on the VIN?

“D” is a 12v diesel.



“6” or “7” is a 24v diesel.



I used this when looking for my (2nd gen. ) truck that I just purchased.

I guess that would be helpful.

It is the 8th digit from the left.
