Folks, I was driving my truck on a routine errand doing about 55-60 mph when I hit a rough spot in the road. The truck started to vibrate and shake and the amplitude increased instead of decreased even after I passed the rough spot. In all my years of driving, I have never experienced anything like it. The vibration quit only after I came to a complete stop. I checked all around the undercarrige saw nothing obvious and continued on my way. It happened again, but I was only doing about 45, and I stopped quickly. This shaking/vibration is so violent, it is scary, and I do not frighten easily. Despite the bad luck I have with dealers I am tempted to bring the truck in. On second thought, I always get better results on this list. Any BTDT on this one?? I would like to take the truck on a trip this weekend, but am real nervous. The truck has 77K miles and has just had the front shock tower recall mod installed. Any help would be appreciated.
TIA

I would check the fasteners in the frontend. The front axle is removed for the work to be done and it sounds like something may have been left loose. A couple of other thoughts: when this happened, did the steering wheel "twist" like an unbalanced tire or was it vibrating like the rest of the truck? Check u-joints (including fron axle) and bolts that hold them in place. Also check the lug nuts. Best of luck.
How do you like your torque converter?

FBFISH,
Check your shocks!!! If the shocks are relatively new, maybe they left one loose and it is no longer doing it's job. Check the airpressure in all your tires, check ALL the bolts they may have had loose for the recall work. I'm guessing it's a non-working shock at one of the corners.

We have a Jeep Cherokee that does this, you can see the front tires shimmy bad.
Not a Cummins I know but similar suspension!
Anyway I would check the ball joints on the track bar, steering arm, etc as well as the above comments.

Folks- Thanks for the inputs. We can rule out wheel balancing and roundness. I have put over 2K miles on the truck since the shock tower work most of it towing 10,000 lbs. I was under the truck today changing oil and still saw no evidence of anything broken or unattached. Extreme 1 So far I have had no trouble with my TC or any other part of the engine/drive train. Joe thinks the steering shock could be the problem. Any way to isolate?
