Recently I posted concerning the note I had received from the local Cummins Rep.

Well, this morning I went out to Victoria Engineering to meet the Service Manager. All the mechanics stopped working and came out and and oohed and aahed for awhile. They took down the engine # and then ran it through their computer and gave me the readout on my engine's build date, specs, etc. On the negative side, they don't have the INSITE service tool for our engine (nobody here has completed the course yet).

On the positive side, they insisted that shouldn't be a problem. They said that if I keep up with routine maintenance, the engine should be extremely reliable and that they can order all parts and maintenance items. They also said that even without INSITE, as long as they can read the codes for what's gone wrong, they can repair it. So I guess I'll buy a scan tool to read and reset error codes.

The service manager showed me around their work area. They are reps for Cummins, Komatsu, Case IH, and others, but they will work on almost anything. He showed me their "clean room" where they rebuild pumps and injectors. Most importantly, he took me into the back of the garage area where he showed me his heavily modified, Range Rover-based, racing buggy. He said they just finished a rally car for somebody else, and that his next personal project will be a "daily driver" 4x4 with a Cummins engine. :D

They said they'd be happy to help me design, build, and install push bars, skid plates , hi-lift jack points and tow hooks. When I asked about maintenance intervals, the Service manager said he changes the oil and filter in his personal 8. 3 every 6,000 kilometers due to high sulphur levels in the local diesel and suggested I do the same. When I asked if they're open on Saturdays, he said they're closed, but he works on his Range Rover on Saturdays, so if I wanted to do maintenance then, he'd call in a mechanic.

To top it all off, the Service Manager asked me if I had the manuals for the truck yet. When I said I had ordered a shop manual but it had not arrived, he gave me a copy of the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the ISB so I can make decisions on service intervals. In exchange for their helpfulness, all I could offer was a test drive in my CTD, which the manager accepted without hesitation.

All I can say is that I'm impressed by Cummins service. When I first decided to take a CTD to Africa, I was a bit worried about service, but I'm definitely feeling better now! So if you're driving through East Africa (especially you 12-valvers), don't hesitate to drop by Victoria Engineering.

Expat

That is great support. I love my Cummins and know you will love yours. I am sure you will feel more secure in it out in the bush. I also have a Toyota Landcruiser FZJ80. I understand they are used quite a lot in your area. I'm on a LC site with guys around the world that say they get several 100k mile out of them with no major problems. They say the Land Rovers are crap. What have you found to be true over there? Good luck and keep us posted. Also be careful.

EXPAT,

Glad to hear that the servicing of your CTD won't be a hassle.

Maybe D/C Corp needs to send some of OUR "5 Star" people to your neck of the woods to remind them what Customer Service is all about.

Good luck.

Such A Deal !

Good show on the great service there. It really says something about our 5 Star Dealers when you can get better service in Africa than you can on the West Coast of CA.

Man, Expat, ain't life good ! :D Africa... . most of us country boys here are dodging cow pats, you're dodging lion and rhino pats... .

Thanks for sharing a glimpse of your life over there, tell us more when you get time.

Gotta tell, ya, though, it ain't the Cummins you're gonna need much service on, it's what it comes wrapped in that needs work most of the time. :(

Tom, you've hit the nail right on the head. Since I returned to Europe with my truck and camper last year, I've been responsible for my own proactive maintenance and servicing and so far have not had anything too difficult to deal with the past 20k miles. Proactive is definitely the operative word here for your own peace of mind.

Hey, Expat how big are the mosquitos in your part of the world?Over here they all seem to have a death wish, trying to decorate the front of just about every vehicle on the road.

Hey Expat,

I'm in the relocation business... hopefully your relocation process was smooth. If your with the GSA, I know who relocated you.

Good luck in Africa. My brother-in law is in the Congo (missionary). He really likes it their... except for the misquitoes.

Briar Hopper and John McIntyre: Unfortunately, I suspect you're right about the engine not being the source of future mechanical problems. Still, I feel pretty good about those heavy Dana and New Venture parts. My service manuals arrived in the mail today, so I'm feeling fairly well prepared.

Lion pats are pretty small, and there aren't enough rhinos around for their pats to be an issue. It's the elephant patties that get you. Seriously. When you run over a fresh one, you can throw a lot of smelly material around.

African mosquitos are nothing to fool around with. The "bite" isn't so bad, it's the malaria that gets you. Kampala is at about 3,500 feet of altitude, so the temperature is pleasant and the mosquitos aren't that bad. In the lower areas, though, they can be a real problem.

ftb87: Is your brother-in-law in Congo-Brazzaville or Democratic Republic of the Congo? Either way, I hope he's being careful. Congo's a tough neighborhood.

Rednuts 98: Pictures as soon as I have some good ones on safari!

Best regards to all,

Don

Expat,

Put an EZ or a Comp on, let them install a set of DDII's for you and then take them for another ride. :D
