Diesels in the News

Old Diesel Ford Tractor

I have been thinking about purchasing a VW Bug or Jetta with the 1. 9 Lt TDI diesel engine. I like the 55 mpg hwy. mileage they advertise. Does anyone have one? Give me all the good and BAD things you can offer. Thanks.

PS. Do they get 55MPG. ????? Also pro's and con on manual or auto transmission.

VW TDI

Hi Royal. . I have a 99. 5 jetta TDI A4, probably the first one in New England ??

Yes, the do get 50 MPG +/-, they outrun most standard V sixes, handle like a cat and are fun to drive !! Mine is a standard which works very well, I have friends who have auto trans and have had no problems. You MUST use their anti freeze when adding or changing, it probably something that i will be using in my Dodge rad as well !!

There are few knowledgable dealers around here ;o(

And they do have a few areas which need modification ASAP depending on the year.

What model year are you looking at ??

My previous VW was also a turbo diesel, a 91 which I put 225K on and sold it to someone who put on another 75K before he sold it to someone else. . still running well with only normal repairs.

Thje 91's to early 99 get about 43-47 MPG depending on the transmission. How you drive them doesn't matter much !! Timing belts on all of them need to be changed about every 80 to 90 K. And, the correct oil in the A-4 is critical.

A site that is every bit as good and as informative as this TDR site for the VW TDI can be found at: http://www.tdiclub.com/

there is no charge to register, it is very complete !!

If I can be of more help to you, let me know.

The VW TDI is nice. Lots of room in the front. If I had to do it again I would get the Jetta-1 or Golf-2. These two get higher mpg than the NB-it has the most drag on it of the three. There all the same frames, drive train just different body styles. And the NB does not have a temp gage just a light thats blue when engine is cold then goes out and if it gets warmer than it should be I think it turns yellow and red:eek: for hot. Best mpg I have got is 53 and I usually run 65 on hwy sometimes faster:--) Since I went back to using the Stanadyne additive all my tanks have been 50 or more. Go over to Freds http://www.tdiclub.com/ and you will get all the info on the VW TDI.

we got my wife an '03 Jetta TDI in Oct and it already has 20,000 miles. not one problem yet. great car. Timing belts on '03 go for 100,000 miles.

we recently made a trip up to PA and I ran 80+ most of the way and we still got 800 miles out of the tank of fuel(about 16 gallon tank, topped off).

great car, would buy another, well, will proabably trade it on a new TDI Passat in '04 or '05.

My one and only complaint is the lack of lumbar support in the front seats on a long trip.
