New Show on FX - Rescue Me

Time to get the wife a new car, and I'm trying to talk her into a Jetta wagon TDi. I know they have been talked about on this forum before, I just can't find the threads. Can anyone point me to a good forum, or to any good dealers, or offer any advice? I'm in Michigan, but I run to Tennessee about every 2 months... so anything between here and there is fair game for me. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Chris:)

Great little car. I have a sadan. If you get one, make sure you get a 5-speed. I get no less than 52 mpg ... AND THAT IS NO B. S. !!!! My best is 58. 65 mpg on a trip from NJ to NH.

I have just under 50K on mine now and it is about 19 months old.

The new 2004s are more powerfull then the older ones.

I do about 600 miles a week in it and put in about $18 ... thats it!

Also check out this site for more info.

Thanks FATCAT. Are there any issues with an auto? The wife has never driven a manual, and I don't think I can afford for her to learn! If it's just a few mpg issue, no big deal, but if it's similar to a dodge auto issue... that would concern me. Thanks for the replies.

I was at a VW dealer looking at a TDI Jetta for my wife. The salesman told me that they sell TDI VWs for sticker price only, they don't move on the price. Is this true??? I was shocked. Is it just this dealer that is being greedy?

They probably just sell so well they refuse too. I know in california and other places dirtbikes are that way. Where I am there is very little haggling on dirtbikes, they will not come of MSRP but they do shell out some good deals on there equipment if you're persistant.

Here on those stupid little mini cooper cars so many people want them they're not budging off MSRP.

It's up to the dealer, they probably can get it out of someone else and are wiling to tell you to take a hike. It sucks but that's capitalism, someone is always willing to pay for what they want.

One of my buddies just got a Jetta TDI for him and his wife. Haven't seen it yet but I'll have to try it out.

And what is the price for one of these little things?

Wife

The wife got a Beetle, it gets around 45-60 at average. Will run down the highway at 80+ all day and handles like a dream. The big maintenance thing with em is a timing belt replacment due at 60,000. At this time around $300. 00 in tools, and 150 in parts, might as well do water pump at same time. Cost at dealer around 900.

Thanks for the replies. We are going to test drive a couple tonight... . I'm real concerned about the amount of room in the back seat. I have a 2 1/2 year old that rides in a child seat, and it looks like there might not be enough room to sit up front comfortably with him in the back seat. In my QC Ram, when he rides in the back I have to put him where his feet go inbetween the 2 front seats..... and if the Jetta is similar, it would be a deal breaker. Anybody have any experience with this?

When I drove the TDI cars recently, I was actually amazed at how well they squirted around. Nice low end torque and plenty of power. My sister has an '03 Jetta with the non-turbo 4 cylinder gasser, and the TDI I drove pulled much harder than her gasser. And the mileage! On the top of my wife's wish-list is a brand new Jetta wagon TDI with the manual trans. The Taurus wagon we have is a rolling toilet.

back seat area is tight for our 4 year old in a booster, but that is because I am 6'3" . a shorter person may leave more room for the little ones.

As far as price, we got our jetta TDI for 17,000 . It was below sticker.

As 'Uncle Joe' (BigDaddy) said - I'm chock full of TDI info...

www.tdiclub.com is like the TDR for TDI's... there is tons of info on that site.

My little Beetle TDI went like a son of a gun by the time I was done with it and still got REALLY good mileage.
