First I'm hearing of this... Where this happened is on Long Island. There is no justification for this, BUT I'm THINKING the attacker was a frustrated LIPA or other territorial (union?) employee. The Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) is under huge scrutiny right now because as of last night there were some 60,000 without power still. I'm surprised nothing more has come of it... .

Funny the article didn't mention race. Wanna bet the attackers were, ummmm bl... ... ?

I dont care where they work or what color they are if it were me Id pack up my I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER and leave. Go out of your way to help some folks and get MY A** KICKED I think NOT. Bet they didn't even know he was there to help or what he worked on BUT IT STILL WOULD BE

Agreed, stay in the frigin' dark if they want to act like that. Anything less than a full blown manhunt for that moron would indicate to me that my services were no longer needed...

Mike.

BIG, I think youre missing my hunch. It's a turf war. You're from cali- you should know... Hey right across the street from my shop is a mall where similar out of towners are tying up for the night- about 200 bucket trucks. There was a CTD for a lead truck. I was wondering if it could be tramplineman. I took a stroll over to say thanks, and yes they seemed uptight at first, but as I showed my intentions, there was no problem. Very similar to the misinformation about the Alabama guys going into jersey. . still is a volatile thing...

This reminds me of an incident with a city bus driver in Cleveland recently. A drunk got on his bus, didnt pay, and was bieng very beligerent to boot. The driver finally asked the drunk to get off. They went back and forth and the drunk walked over and jacked the driver while he was driving the bus. The bus driver stopped the bus got up and straight lit this guy up with an uppercut. One shot to the chin and this idiot hit the floor like a sack of potatoes. The driver picked him up and carried him off the bus and radioed to dispatch what had happened and waited for the cops to come. This was all caught on video. The driver lost his job. Rediculous.

Unfortunately this is the big city mentality. My whole attitude changes when I have to drive passengers into the city. Dont care what Bloomburg says, I pack everywhere!

I spent many days dropping gas in South Central LA and most of those days started at 1AM. Not ONE time did I have any problems in the CONGO!! AS WE CALLED IT. Not to say that I didn't keep my head on a 360 degree swivel, if its worst than South Central LA then that place needs to be eradicated from the planet.

You're right. We don't know this entire story. We don't know if there was a prior altercation or if someone was drunk. There might be a surveilance video somewhere. Either way, it is not right what happened. I have a hard time conveying over the Internet (that's why I don't go into politics anymore) I still think there was a territorial issue, and not a race based issue. They usually happen differently where the animals don't usually pull up in a car and MAKE A HIT. That's the only clue I can give here.
I GUARANTEE- in any locale, even a sleepy town, if I was a foreigner and showed up to do YOUR JOB you wouldn't like it.
Again I'm not giving the attacker any right of way, but tensions are running mighty high in certain areas now. People are panicking because they lost everything and some are so greedy that the situation is viewed as a money mill.

Wayne, I hope this is not a union related affair or turf war but I would not be surprised if it was. Ill probably be stepping on someones toes by saying this but that is the mentality of unions. I worked for a non union steel erector for 13 years and even though we were a small company we competed with the local halls and many times outbid them. Needless to say, we always outworked them. Theyve sabatoged our equipment, tried blocking us in or out of job sites, and even started fights in the past. And for what? Because we chose not to be part of a union hall? I currently work in a maintenance dept for Cristal Global (formerly Millenium) which is Duponts rival company. There are 2 plants withen a mile of each other. The one down the road is union, we are not. We are the same company, make the same product. Every year we out produce them, our cost per ton is substantially lower, and our maintenance backlog is literally half of what theirs is. They make every excuse possible to get out of work, Ive seen it first hand countless times as a contractor. The place is a mess. Unorganized, and the mentality and work ethic is worlds apart from us. The plant down the road originally was owned by dupont in the 60s and they brought the union in. Our plant was originally owned by Gulf Western, weve always been non union. They tried to bring it in a few times even as recently as 5 years ago and its always been voted down. We dont want it.

I agree and can relate to this statement. As a logger/trucker I have run into this everytime I moved into a new area. The locals are almost cult like and resist your being there, sometimes very open about it and always secretly. If you break down or have some bad luck they love to snicker behind your back. They will include the loader operators in their resistance, to include crappy logs (they will save them for you) lopsided loads, truck heavy, trailer heavy and side heavy. They can be typical bullies, one on one they are your buddy, but in a group, they become gang like.

It seems the assault may not have anything to do with the power outages/local unions, etc... ... Here's the story from the gentleman who was charged with the assault:

It would be interesting to see a picture of this guy. If he truly got jumped by a bunch of people, you would think he would turn out looking like the guy in the picture. If this guy from FL wasnt acting alone, how would he get beat up so bad? Is it just me or does this not make alot of sense? Maybe Im just missing something... .

On edit, my wife is from Levittown, quite a ways from Long Island. Weve talked to her family a few times since the storm they lost power briefly but was back on withen a few days. Many people didnt even lose. Power. I think theres others on this site from that area, maybe they can chime in about this guys claims of just getting his power back on
