How many of you are using some sort of VOIP like Vonage?

I am thinking of switching as it will save me about $30/month.

My only concern is having kids in the house and if the need ever arrises will the 911 work like it's supposed to? they say that it will, but was just wondering if any one knows a bit more about it.

TIA, Joe

VoIP 911 works *VERY* differently than a POTS 911 call. You'll need to register your location with your VoIP service.

There have been some recent changes in this. It used to be that you'd connect to the VoIP center first, which would then contact the proper 911 service. I thought this was supposed to change, but don't know if it did.

Personally, with kids in the house, POTS has a clear edge over digital service. MaBell realistically can hit 5 9s availability. I've never had DSL or cable service come close. Don't forget to make sure your modem/router and VoIP adapter box are on a UPS as well.

From what I understand the new 911, I think they call it "enhanced" is supposed to work just like your normal line if you are in a enhanced area.

I am getting tired of paying Verizon $60+/month for phone and a bit of Long distance. I think this is a good option.

There however are other options coming out now. A friend here at work just signed up for T-Mobile VOIP. It is $10/month.

We have had Vonage for about 2 years now and the savings over POTS has been worth it since we call the in-laws in the UK all the time. As far as 911 service we kept our POTS line with min service for < $8/mnth they will deal when you tell them you are leaving, we liked the idea of having a phone when pwr goes out.

Check the performance of your DSL line before you go. Typical VOIP needs 100K both ways. If you only have 300K or so up, the calls could be choppy. If you have cable or FIOS, you ar probably OK.

My brother had Vonage,he hated it. I told him about "majic jack" and he said it was pretty good the first month. Sucked after that.

He's in Calvery cty Md.

I talked with Verizon tonight, if I bundle my phone, internet and cable I will be looking at $115 per month, 135 with taxes.

Right now for all that I am at about 170-180. I think I may go that route next month when my Dish network contract ends. That way I keep my FIOS phone and get their TV.
