How difficult would it be get the pump gear a tooth off. Truck starts an idles good but seems to be lacking power. Seems to run like a stock truck. I am tapped and running a banks ottomind (power pack). Idle is smoother but no balls. My boost was down 5 psi from what it used to be. Any thoughts?

If you removed the gear (which involves removing the timing cover) then sure, its very possible to get the timing gears misaligned a tooth off. Why would you even think this happened?

I’m guessing you put a new VP44 on your truck. Your new pump should have come with a new key. Did you use the new key and did you verify the new key and the number on the pump matched?

The key was already installed on the shaft, and no I did not verify the match. Wish I would have. It did not feel like it wanted to come off so I left it. I wonder if they super-glued it on or something. I watched the key enter the gear with a flashlight so I don't think that is the problem. The other issue is maybe the key was on backwards. I would think if the timing was off it would be running like crap. It starts hot or cold perfect and idles great. It could be my programmer is not working like it should. I used the stealth plate and verified voltage at ignition on. It was down on power before the vp change a little but not this much. I am tempted to ditch the ottomind and go with edge programmer.

You need to explain in detail what happened... Cant help unless we know what and why you're dealing with whatever you're dealing with.

My VP44 bit the dust. Code 1688. Ordered a refurbished VP and installed. Had no complications. Started and runs fine but do not make the power I am used to. Trying to make sure I covered all the bases. My question is do some VP's have different behaviors. Do some run stronger than others. I am happy I am running again but want my power back.

Seem's I have read other posts like this but never read a fix. Seems it was kind of narrowed down to the electronic's on the pump.

Who did you get the VP from and whats the code on the side of the PSG (the computer on top of the VP). That would tell you if the VP was the correct one for your truck.
The key is matched to the VP on a Bosch 815 test bench so you cant mess with them. If the key was misaligned during the install and got partially smashed then it will affect overall timing and generally cause a slight miss during idle. If you're uncertain you can pull the engine vent cover, remove the timing gear nut, pull the gear loose, and then pear down between the shaft and the gear with a mirror and flashlight seeing if you can notice the keys condition.

Try disconnecting your power box (might unplug from the rear of the box, or disconnect power lead to it) if "tap to VP" wire has a connection maybe unplug that. Then see how it runs, obviously it won't have the power it would if the box was connected, but you'd be able to see if it runs like stock using acceleration chart provided in a previous reply. Oh, did you give whomever you purchased the Reman VP from the codes from the side of your timing cover and stock VP? If you originally had an SO VP 215HP (I believe automatics only came with the SO = Standard Output) and for some reason got the HO (manual trans I think they were 235HP but not sure) that'll screw things up as timing is different (pretty certain) between std & auto trans. What is the rebuilder telling you?

I purchased VP from Thoroughbred Diesel. They told me that I would have other symptoms if I smashed the key or something like that. No hard codes. Have not scanned for soft codes yet. I got a non-ho pump (15x). Got the 2 year pump warranty that is supposed to be a new psg. Since I was not running full strength at breakdown I want to lean towards a bad Banks Ottomind. I have read some threads that slam banks pretty hard. Banks does not support this product anymore. I called them. I want to remove this but need to look into what I need to do. I need to see if somebody on this site has done this. I will lose my pillar gauges for sure. I was thinking about trying the edge/ attitude. Any suggestions on removing the Ottomind?

Before you get too involved verify your boost sensor is accurate -compare the reading the pcm sees to a mechanical gauge

I got mine thru Thoroughbred 10 years back it has worked very well for me. Wow, 10 years is coming up next month:eek: and assuming the truck had the original VP when I got it in 01 -> 2+2= keeping my appandages crossed...
BTW, I've had the Edge Comp since 03 and used the "Stealth Cover" to tap when I got new VP in 09. Comp has also worked very well.
