Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) VP 44 Injection Pump dying?

I've got a 2001 Dodge Ram 3500 with a few problems with the fuel system. I've got a loping idle, an intermittent dead pedal at cruising speeds, and decent fuel pressure. There are no codes when cycling the switch and I have replaced the APPS-new from the Dodge Stealership. The truck hasn't shown any codes and only reads P-done. A scanner was hooked up to the truck to read the APPS and when the dead pedal acted up the scanner didn't show a corresponding change. I cannot think of anything besides the problem being the injector pump. If so, where is the best place to get an injector pump. I'm thinking of doing this pump change myself. What are the biggest obstacles to removing this pump. If I do it, I will most likely remove the radiator, fan, and shroud. From there I will remove the balancer, fan pulley and front cover. From this point is where I need the advice. In summary, I need to know if the injector pump is the problem, where I can get another injector pump-(whether I should go to my local shop called Williams Diesel Service or I should go with a supplier more on the national level), and a comprehensive guide to replacing the IP. The local shop quoted me a price of $1,000 for a rebuild and I have never had my vehicles over in there shop for service.

I'm no expert on VP's but that definitely sounds like a bad or soon to be bad VP44. Maybe someone with more experience with them will chime in. I do not know what brands/shops are ideal. Do a search on "VP44" or "injection pump" and you'll prob find some of what your looking for.



I do know that you do not need to take all of that stuff off the front that you mentioned; just for a VP44 swap anyhow. Only thing that comes off forward of the VP is the crankcase breather setup. Hope this helps

I'm in the same situation you are at present. Have an '01 2500 that has been a great truck. Just replaced the lift pump, but am beginning to get the dead pedal occurring more frequently. Like Carolina Cummins said above, search the forum -- there is a series of videos by Diesel Dan that shows the replacement process.

On my 2001 I just had my VP 44 replaced. I did get codes for a second time and I had the start of a dead pedal and my mileage was suffering. My truck also was loping at a cold startup. Now with a new pump my power has returned, mileage is better and no more loping. Sounds like you may be in the same boat.
